 PRESS RELEASE

The wild and dangerous Stolen Lands lie in the northern reaches of the River Kingdoms, realms ripe for the taking! Yet those who would become rulers of these new lands will soon learn that claiming a kingdom and keeping it are two different beasts. Can the heroes protect their lands from jealous and deadly enemies?

Pathfinder: Kingmaker – Definitive Edition Content:
The Pathfinder Kingmaker: Definitive Edition adds all previously released DLC content directly to the game and comes with the brand new turn-based mode, which not only brings the game closer to the tabletop experience but also adds a new tactical layer. Owners of the PC version will receive this new mode as a free patch-update later.

Providing ultimate control over the battlefield, the new turn-based mode works in harmony with the real-time with pause combat and players can smoothly switch between both depending on the situation they face or the way they want to play the game.

Pathfinder: Kingmaker takes players on an adventure through the infamous Stolen Lands, the dangerous and turbulent territories well known within Pathfinder fandom. The RPG revisits familiar characters and well-known locations from the lore of the franchise, and treats players to brand new adventures, deadly foes, and unforeseen twists and turns. Fans of the fantasy pen-and-paper RPG will experience this epic, heroic universe in new ways while computer RPG gamers will discover their favorite genre in a more contemporary light, with stunning 3D graphics that bring the world to life.

Pathfinder: Kingmaker will challenge players as both adventurers and rulers as they claim explored lands and carve their kingdom from the wilderness. Kingdom-founding goes beyond simple stronghold-building to become a true reflection of the hero character and choices made throughout the game. Each kingdom is a living and breathing world, shaped by rules, choices, allies, and the hero's ability to lead his or her people.

My kingdom for a game using the PF2 ruleset!
Fantasy Grounds or Roll20, I guess?

Wow. $50 on console. I'd be interested in trying it, but need to wait until it comes down a bit. I've never been particularly good at CRPGS like Divinity, Pillars of Eternity, Numenera, etc. They're just too obtuse for me to figure them out.

I loved Baldur's Gate and all the old D&D games, as well as Divinity 1 and 2. I'm trying to get into Pillars of Eternity right now, and it is a little harder to love on my part. So I am looking forward to trying Kingmaker.

To anyone who has played it: I prefer turn-based to real-time-with-pause. How is the turn-based mode on Kingmaker?

Can only speak about the 3rd party mod I used to enable it but it altered the difficulty curve drastically. The end boss of the super dungeon became much easier in turn mode.
To anyone considering it - either play with the kingdom management switched to automatic or save each time you have to deal with kingdom management. Failing those tasks early in the game will come back to bite you big time later on - to the point of ruining your enjoyment of the game potentially.

The definitive edition released now has both real time and turn based modes.

I enjoy both combat modes but TB makes Kingmaker much, much easier. The main reason is that Kingmaker's vanilla AI is coded to have monsters respond to potential AoEs by spreading out and/or charging your front-line once your casters start casting. That works OK as a strategy when you play RTwP but goes disastrously wrong in TB where enemies become sitting ducks for your AoEs. Owlcat could have taken care of this either by updating the AI or revamping their encounters to do a better job spacing monsters apart, but they didn't do either one.

You see this same thing play out with other mods too, like "proper flanking" which replaces Kingmaker's lenient flanking rules with PF1e's. On the surface this sounds like a difficulty increase, but because enemy AI is coded for the vanilla flanking rules, enemies will keep making attacks that would've gotten SA damage in vanilla but now don't. Whereas you as a player will just adjust your strategy to fit the new flanking rules (plus if you are using glitterdust and the like to get SA damage then it makes little difference to you how tough the flanking/positioning rules get anyway).

Bottom line, you have to be really careful about TB and other mods if you're looking to be challenged. But Kingmaker is still a great game whether you play vanilla or TB/modded.
