D&D 5E Another “Running for one player” thread...

So as the coronavirus trudges on I’ve decided to run an in-person game for 1 player (tired of doing online games as I sit in front of a computer all day anyway).

This is going to be a prequel ”early years” game for this players character (she loves this character who is a Ranger and a loner anyway so the set up is quite nice). I’m thinking of allowing her two animal companions (more as side kicks rather than companions in the ranger sense in order to give her support.

In my mind this character is Tarzan-like, protecting her territory from unwelcome intruders, rescuing creatures great and small. This players also loves exploration, so I’m wondering how that could fit in? Perhaps she raids ancient sites for treasures to trade for necessities in the local town or with some nearby druid (whose presence she tolerates).

This character‘s parents were murdered 10 years earlier by some undead horde so a run in with them/their leader will likely be the culmination of this little series (of course). She’s going to start at level 3.

Anyway I was wondering if anyone had some short adventure recommendations that might work for this kind of situation.? I’ll also be searching DMs Guild.

Have her face and defeat a big scary wilderness monster (small black dragon, chimera, manticore, whatever) that she takes out that was blocking off part of the wilderness. That then opens up more wilderness on the other side to exploration. Perhaps the background is the big baddie has been stationary but recently expanded to prey into her territory. Perhaps even have the first adventure be tracking down these attacks to the known baddie who is now crossing into her territory to prey on the animals she protects.

How do you plan to handle the elephant in the room, which is the fact this character can't die? If it's a prequel to an established character, it's already a given this character will survive her adventures so she can go on to become the character of now times.

It's fine - we're much more about story and adventure than threat of death. (Also she just had a death in her family so this is an escape so I'm very not interested in trying to kill her character :) ). This is for character to have some interesting encounters, fun challenges and new things to explore.

Fair enough. I get what you're doing now. More about roleplaying and less about overcoming difficult conflicts.

Here's my suggestion: Set up a reason for a quest. Have the PC and companions told the end result of the quest can only be found in a remote mountain valley that's incredibly difficult to reach. Run an adventure session with all sorts of challenges to make it through a hidden and very tough to traverse mountain path.

Further sessions become a hexcrawl inside the valley. The PC an explore the valley, overcoming challenges, finding allies, etc.

Yep - definitely looking for a "normal world" - "adventure world" - "normal world" hero's journey type of campaign. Good ideas thanks.

You could introduce a new villain here that can come back in the other story. This was it is foreshadow when the BBRG comes back later.

"Nice to see you, Newman."
