D&D 5E Material components

You think that's silly? I played one of the Star Wars games where I literally pulled an AT-ST out of my pack....
That's pretty silly alright.

WAY, way back in high school, I played Ultima VI over the summer. I figured out that Dupre (the strong one) could, if he emptied his backpack, carry a canoe in it. If my party walked up to a river, I'd take it out of backpack, drop it in the river, put all my party in it, cross the river, and then put it back in my backpack.

I once had a player who after checking the 1st level characters inventory thought he could carry a cord of firewood in his backpack.
 


I cant remember what edition it was in but didnt a wizard/magic user/mage lose all memorized spells if they were knocked unconscious? I seem to remember playing a wizard, being capture and in a cell and couldnt just escape because I had no spells.
I'm going to guess that one's a house rule.

It could've been I honestly cant remember anymore its been so long. I looked in the 2E PHB and DMG but couldn't find anything but then again some of those rules are buried so deep that unless you know where they are they're hard to find.

In 1e and 2e, once you hit 0 hit points you can't cast spells for a week, but you don't lose them. I THINK that if you die you lose your spells.

IDR not being able to cast for a week. I thought it was only until you regained 1 hp, got 8 hrs of rest and memorized your spells again. But like I said I could be wrong its been so long.

I tend to obsess over what my own character's hands are doing and tend to play a lot of spellsword types, so I keep track of whether they are slinging a wand, drawing from a component pouch, or not on a particular turn, as that is a hand that is not holding a weapon.

Priced components have to be tracked down at every table I've ever played at (at least so far as I know), with some occasional handwavy freebies when the DM wanted to simplify something and some retconning purchases the character would have remembered to make in the last town that a player didn't. As a DM I've only ever really made it a struggle when it comes to components for a few problem spells, like Revivify diamonds.
