D&D 5E Modern and Sci fi for D&D 5th edition

Illithids being from space (like a lot of Lovecraftian horrors) caused thematic problems for you? That seemed one of the more natural elements to me.
Yeah, it stuck in my craw for some reason. I'd probably be okay with it nowadays, if they dialed back the campiness a bit and dressed them up in different clothes and spaceships, maybe tightened up the lore. But at the time, I remember rolling my eyes and thinking "this looks so dumb."

Granted, I was 16 years old at the time.

I heartily second that sentiment. How can you not love illithids and the Far Realm?

Dark Matter, by Mage Hand Press, is pretty good product for sci-fi games. I like how it still has some feeling of D&D but in a space future.
