With Paramount's D&D movie just over a year away, thought it was high time to get a wild speculation thread going, as well as a poll to check on what direction we think/hope the film will go! For the poll, you get three responses, please use no more than 1 for each type, Setting, Tone, and Framing (I can't enforce this, but it will be more helpful if everyone does this).

Here is what we do know as of March 15, 2021.

When: May 27, 2022
Directors: John Francis Daley, Jonathan Goldstein (Game Night, Vacation)
Writers: John Francis Daley, Jonathan Goldstein (Spider Man Homecoming, Horrible Bosses)
Stars: Chris Pine (Star Trek, Wonder Woman), Michelle Rodriguez (Fast & Furious, Avatar), Hugh Grant (The Undoing, Love Actually, Paddington 2), Rege-Jean Page (Bridgerton), Sophia Lillis (IT, I Am Not Okay With This), Justice Smith (Detective Pikachu, Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom)

So what are your hopes, fears, dreams for the movie! What do you want out of the Tone, Setting and Framing of the film? How much will this make at the box office? Speculate to your heart's content!

Hmmm, I think this still falls into the category of speculation until confirmed by the studio. I think it's very, very likely that it will be in FR, but for now I think having it as a question is fine!

Edit: This article also says that the main villain will be Drow, which, even if Hugh Grant wasn't playing the villain, I think is simply impossible to imagine today and makes me question even more the "sources" of this article.

I'm hoping it will be an Action/Comedy with a frame set around a Game Table where we get to see the game through their imagination of it with some occasional cross table chatter bleeding through. I do expect it to be in Forgotten Realms but I'm hoping for a homebrew setting ;)
I hope this is right. A D&D movie that is just lore and action with no discernable gameplay might be entertaining but it won't be all that it could be. If done well, it will be the biggest one shot actual play promotional piece WotC could ever dream of.

Expect and hope are different things. I expect them to try to emulate MCU's formula but hope they go for something closer to LotR.

I would guess it is set in the FR, and am fine with that. I think they'll do it immersive - meaning, no sucking into the D&D world, although that would be fun for a Stranger Things style TV series, but hopefully not the movie(s).
