The Irregulars (Netflix series)

The Irregulars is a netflix show that reimagines the Baker Street Irregulars of the Sherlock Holmes stories as a YA scooby doo gang hired by a rather brusque and unlikeable Dr Watson to investigate some supernatural murders and with the new Ravenloft discussions I thought it might have potential for some ideas.
The shows premise has potential but the trailer does a far better job of presenting the idea than the full episodes do. While the poverty and harshness of Victorian London is supposed to be a theme, the cast dont really come across as the traumatised survivors of Dickensian workhouses, the supernatural elements are underdeveloped and the first few episodes come across as monster-of the- week,

Once it gets past episode 4, where a heroin addled Holmes is brought in, the story does develop and it gets better, but never quite reaches the promise of the trailer

The trailer looks enticing; but that's what snippets are intended to do. The proof is in the whole cloth and not its pieces (textile mill comparison intentional...).

I was put off by the supernatural elements, because I was expecting - and would have preferred - more of a detective series. I stalled partway through the first episode and haven't gone back to it.

I'm rather enjoying it and while the trauma of the workhouses isn't front and centre through the whole thing, it is raised on occasion as leaving lasting damage to the teens; both physical and mental.

I found it odd, because I think this is the first supernatural/Sherlock Holmes mashup that I have NOT enjoyed. I think that if it had had just a smidge less CW in it, I might have watched more than an episode.

Why “The Irregulars” rather than “Baker Street Irregulars”? Until I read this thread I had no idea it was anything to do with Sherlock Holmes. Just assumed it was another generic teen supernatural thing.

"The Irregulars" by itself was enough of a hint for me, but I've been on a Sherlock Holmes kick for most of the pandemic so it's all pretty close to the surface. I was kind of surprised though that they didn't approach it from the angle of a teen-aged Sherlock and instead opted for the "Holmes and Watson are just two more adults that don't really understand what's going on and who can't be trusted."
