So the quick comparison (O5E vs LUe)

  • 10 ft range vs Touch
  • Must give all undead the same command vs Can give only some of the undead the same command and the rest no command.
  • Upscale has a group attack option vs just upscale.

So looks like the LUe has some slight nerfs to it overall.
One more change is the O5E requires the targets be humanoids so the LU one can reanimate a zombie that has died while the O5E cannot (as the humanoid is now an undead).

I’m new here. I really like what I have read about this product. I will most likely buy it. Hope I get some people to play it with me. I’ll probably have to dm it and provide the book. Disappoints me a little. I kinda want to play it.

You and me both. I'm not the type who normally makes a bunch of PCs just for fun, but I have about a dozen LU characters I've made just in the last few weeks.

That's a good point, so it is probably best left as a variant spell. Still, I am utterly convinced that the regular version needs an upgrade.

Oh, I don't disagree in the slightest! I just think effects on creatures that extend beyond combat need to be used only sparingly, and even then, they need to be considered very very carefully. I think for balancing purposes it's much cleaner to fiddle with the usual dials, like regular damage, duration, etc.

LU requires that the remains be mortal, though, and a zombie isn't mortal.

This does mean that you can use this to animate dead beasts, monstrosities, giants, dragons, etc. Which is good. I had converted a metric ton of spells from 2e to 5e for r/dndnext, and two of them were animate dead animals (2nd level) and animate monster (5th level) specifically to get around that limitation. I won't need to re-convert them to LU now. Even though this means that a relatively low-level spellcaster can animate some really powerful creatures, if they came across the remains of one.

This makes me wonder/hope that LU has brought back at least something like a skeleton and zombie template.

Well, that was fun

Ok, time for somebody else to pick a spell! Same rules as before — one per person, first one to answer.
