Okay here's two off the top of my head;

ROTHENEL: In the distant future a generation colony ship from Earth reaches the dubious safety of a new world only to discover it already colonised by various races they recognise from their myths as elves, dwarves and many others.
The elves allow them to land three of their landing craft and colonise certain parts of the world with the understanding they recognise the other races were there first.
But humanity have always been known to be idiotic and the resulting war causes their various city sized landing ships to end up being sunk and the survivors rebuilding their lives some as slaves and others allowed to persist kept under surveillance because of the treachery of a few.
The elves begin to leave the world as they prefer their feywild home usually only settling on worlds such as this one as holiday homes to spend a short time before returning to their true home as they have much longer lives.
The dwarves prefer their underground realm similar to the feywild as its actually located in another plane, but they hold grudges especially when they're proven to be false as their stubbornness is almost as legendary as their tolerance for alcohol.
Forty years ago an apprentice wizard made a bargain with a mysterious foe granting him the means to conquer most of the world, but for the intervention of a small group of heroes that eventually defeated him.
That however was 40 years ago and a new menace has emerged as various evil cults planning to free their masters from behind the Divine Gates that even the primary deities cannot pass through the only adversary is an order of celestial archons known as the Celestial Bureaucracy most of whom lack the means or understanding to pose much of a threat to their plans bar one vestigal entity a Lantern Archon named Kestra whose call for heroes heralds a new era as the world crumbles into chaos once more.
Will you answer the call and be the hero Rothenel needs in its time of need or the champion of the forces of darkness?

Description: Far future steampunk most of the races and classes of 5e available including zeppelins and artificers are technologists damnit!

RHITIA: A thousand years ago magic returned to the world and civilisation collapsed in its wake.
Most of the world fell into darkness and on the shattered islands of Rhitia a fledgling civilisation is slowly rebuilding as a menacing foe from the distant past threatens everything they've built just to perpetuate the mistakes that caused the downfall of the previous civilisation.
Will you rise to help defend society or take advantage of the resulting chaos even though that will likely spell the end of everything you have sought to build or conquer?

Description: Earth a millennia from now, an unknown event restored magic to the world and the resulting chaos as technology failed costing billion of lives now on the shattered islands of a formerly legendary sea faring kingdom a new hope is rising but against them is a foe from the past whose escape caused the collapse of civilisation and might topple everything now simply because they can't bring themselves to learn from their past to prevent repeating their mistake.

I'd like a Greyhawk or Mystara Setting mind you, but there are literally loads of possiblities if you want an actual new setting the question is what does WOTC want?

define what you mean by this?
Ultimately its Wizard of the Coast that decides this.
It took a contest to bring Eberron into print, same for Dawnforge I believe too.
I know in another thread they suspect Dragonlance might be the setting released later this year of course one sign that might hint at a future release is the unearthed arcana releases but regarding your question.
Was the above a sufficient explanation?

@Faolyn I mentioned Midnight, explicitly where the Evil Gods had conquered and won. >.>

Though Midnight is actually it's own entire game by Fantasy Flight, they made it available for the d20 system back in 3e.

They also made a Movie while trying to make it a TV Series.

A great setting and it is getting a 5e update. Edge Studios is working on it and it should be released this year.

I don't see why WofC needs a new setting. They have lots of old settings that fans want updated and they can create new MtG settings to attempt to draw in Magic players to the game. These are lower cost options (the initial creative work is already done) with a better chance of being successful (they already have a fan base).

There are tons of new settings for 5e already produced and in the works by 3rd parties. If you want something new it is easy to find with lots of variety to choose from. Smaller companies can accept smaller sales and still make a profit, so it is not as much of a risk to them to produce something new and different. If you want new look at what is already out there.
I personally own over a dozen new setting for 5e by 3rd parties.

Reading this thread it is obvious that there are lots of different tastes and lots of different desires for what a new Setting should be. This makes it clear that WotC would have a hard time making something new that would make everyone happy.
So they are better off leaving such ventures to other companies which are currently doing a great job already. Expand your horizons beyond WotC and you might just find a setting that matches what you are looking for.

look most of the old settings have lost the niche to others and would be difficult to sell to new fans.
not a fan of mtg plus you need fans from outside basic wotc properties.

if all you are here is to tell us that we should look elsewhere why post in this thread?

Has Thunder Rift been mentioned yet?
With a bit of tinkering it could set in any of the popular settings an enclosed area where society has been existing since the earliest settlers found themselves stranded here.
And a number of adventures that eventually leads to them finding a way out.
Imagine at least a half dozen scenarios before running the one that ends with them finding a way out to discover they're on.... cue dm's favourite setting regardless of the original being set on Mystara this could easily be added to Faerun, Exandria, Oerth, etc...
Could that work?

possibly but what does it have other than the basic premise to sell it to people?
