From what I'm seeing, this set is a core set in all but name (and well, limited to a single world that isn't a normal Magic plane).

What core set qualities does it really have? Arena has taken over as the onramp for new players, AFR is mostly if not entirely new cards no its not a source if reprints, it doesn't show you what is happening on other MtG planes, it has far more complexity then most Core Sets, it has a story too it. The only thing it has in common with Core Sets as far as I can tell is the amount of cards in the set.

Strixhaven felt more like a Core Set then AFR, it had plenty of reprints if you include Mystic Archieve, and while it had new mechanics they weren't too complicated, and it had 5 precon decks like Core Sets even if they were of a different types from Planeswalker Decks.

For alook at what is going on in the rest of the multiverse, Modern Horizons fills that role even if its not standard legal.

The truth is the AFR set is the weird middle ground between a Universes Beyond Set and regular Standard Legal none Core Set, its Standard Legal, but none canon (for now).

So, Gavin has confirmed that each AFR Commander deck has 17 original cards unique to the deck:

You beat me too it! Congrats!

That is 68 new D&D FR MtG cards. 16 of which are likely Legendary Creature Cards. Roughly in range of what we expected.

It will be interesting to see what reprints from other MtG sets end up in these decks.

Innistrad gets 2 Commander Decks per set, 15 new cards each.

So for this year alone that is 2 Kaldheim sets, 5 Strixhaven Sets, 4 AFR sets, 4 Commander Innistrad sets (split between Crimson Vow and Midnight Hunt) for a total of 15 Commander Decks this year alone. By Comparesion last year "the year of Commander" only had 9 Commander Decks (5 Ikoria, 2 Commander Legends, and 2 Zendikar Rising Decks).

I do think the Commander Decks help make up for the fact that each setting since Ravnica have only had 1 Premiere set apiece, the Commander Decks help flesh settings out.

It was interesting hearing about how they went for four D&D Commander decks so that D&D playgroups could organize a Commander game together.
