I have to admit, I was pretty by-the-book back then, so it may have been that I wasn't comfortable with mixing them. I still don't like a lot of house-rules (at least not when playing by-the-book will do - I mean, I'm not against minor tweaks here and there). I was much fussier in my youth. I guess I just couldn't see it.

Still, I maintain that any 5e revisions that are upcoming will be purpose-built backwards compatible in a way that 2e and 1e were not. (Even if it's effectively similar).

Not likely, considering everyone else’s experiences. Questions about the two properties seem to be what shortens the survey, not age.

As I’ve said before, I will bet you 20$ USD that we do not get a 6e in 2024, and at most we will see a revised set of core books that collates errata, puts optional features in the PHB, maybe shuffles the races and/or classes, and maybe makes some simple changes that won’t invalidate even a single subclass from any 5e sourcebook.
I'm not about to put any money on it, but I wouldn't be surprised if we see exactly what you describe, but they lowkey call it 6E and continue on as is.

They were very resistant to call 5e "Fifth Edition" so I expect that they will, if anything, play down the fact that it's "revised 5e". (As opposed to calling it 6e).

Actually I think the 2e author has said explicitly that they tried for backwards compatibility.

yup, One of Cooks main design goals was broad backward compatibility.

Sure, and maybe my perception of the amount of difference is wrong. Like I said, I’ve read 1e but never played it.

I was hacking HeroQuest to be broader in scope, and never even knew D&D existed, until the late 90’s and Baldur’s Gate 2, and started with 2e, briefly considered 3.5 an improvement but eventually grew to hate it, and then really fell in love with D&D playing and running 4e.

Definitely not discounting your experience or view. I know of some who thought the important differences had little to do with actual rules, sort of.

Anyway I find your path in the hobby kinda unique and pretty interesting.

😂 Yeah, I think that path might be part of why I have basically no threshold for hacking games.

The version of D&D I initially played consisted of the 1e PHB, the 1e MM, the 1e Fiend Folio, the 1e MM2, the 1e Deities & Demigods, the 2e DMG, and the BECMI Expert Set (the Isle of Dread in particular, but also the "How much does it cost to build a castle" stuff). I tend to call it 1st edition for a practical summary, but, it was a quite functional mutt.

To be fair, just because you can play Frankensteined D&D doesn't really make them entirely compatible. I mean, I made a game that my group played very wonderful games for an entire decade that was a mash-up of 2e D&D and Call of Cthulhu - but I wouldn't call those two games compatible.

That said, I am now entirely convinced that 2e and 1e were not hard to mix, even if my group never did it.

And yet I still maintain that I believe that any new D&D for the foreseeable future will still count as 5e (with new swap-out options), and not 5.5 or 6e.
