They don't -explicitly- scream "Dragonlance" to me, either... But.

If you had to release a Dragonlance Book and had an edict from on high to make Dragonborn more "Dragonlance Friendly" (Since they're a core race and must therefore be available in all settings) wouldn't you take the same steps as those presented in the UA?

No other setting is quite -as- reliant on creating a significant difference between Chromatic and Metallic Dragonborn, after all. Forgotten Realms made them all kind of Dingy brown, Rust colored, or vaguely dark rather than giving them a specific ancestry. Greyhawk could have them in a similar style. Birthright probably wouldn't care, and in Dark Sun Dragonborn would be, like, twisted children of Sorcerer-Kings trying to become dragons themselves.

But Dragonlance is centered around the dragons being opposed to each other as an explicit thing. The whole War of the Lance and all is fought on the back of specifically colored dragons based on whose side you're on. Takhisis and Paladine are really quite explicit in their connections to the dragons for a reason, after all.

Having them look like Metallic or Chromatic dragons would also help to make them visually distinct from the different Draconians, which are of course a different thing.

The Gem Dragon and Kobold changes are just kind of... "There", and there's FR-Specific spells, too.

But with Fizban and the Metallic/Chromatic split... I feel like there's still a chance. Not a certainty, by any means. But I feel like it's definitely a contender.

1) They haven't released a book, yet.
2) Maybe, sure.
I feel like if they wanted to do dragonlance, they'd make dragonborn variants more like the draconians. The current UA dragonborn are nothing like them. They even call out draconians in the PHB as being like dragonborn but with magical abilities in place of their breath weapon. I really do think that they'd trial a bunch of unique abilities in place of the current UA dragonborn which seem more like they've taken to heart that the race needs a boost in overall power. I also think they'd have a few more non-draconic themed subclasses that are linked to the setting. Happy to be wrong though, I do love dragonlance.

All the Draconians are Evil, though. You couldn't replace the Dragonborn with Draconians and have it still fit the heroic player character race. Especially since they've got no breath weapons and only do something special when they die.

I feel like they'd either need to cut Draconians altogether (Which an update to the story could do pretty easily) or make them as separate from Dragonborn as Kobolds and Lizardmen are.

I could totally see a "New Age of Krynn" in which the Draconians are nixed in favor of "Children of Paladine" and "Spawn of Takhisis" as rank and file soldiers in an epic new War of the Lance.

Not all draconians are evil, many of the originals have quit the dragonarmies and formed their own kingdom (I think they had a trilogy about it). They also have chromatic dragonborn now that when created were good. The PHB dragonborn call out that fact that draconians have no breath weapon and instead have magical abilities, I think that's how they would differentiate them by making a specific dragonlance subraces of dragonborn instead of trying to shoehorn in the current ones.

I could definitely see that, yeah.

I dunno. After reading Van Richten's I could honestly see them going either way with Draconians. Or even having the Dragonborn be Descendants of Draconians. Especially with alllll the changes they've made to Lamordia, Falkovnia, Darkon... Even the fact that the Core itself, and in fact any coherent connection between the Dread Realms, is utterly gone.

Lotta ways it could go. And I'm still holding out hope we'll see Dark Sun and Spelljammer out next. Just feeling a little less than optimistic.

If they were planning a Dragonlance book, don't you think they would save a Dragonlance spell for the Dragonlance book? Dragonlance material appearing in other books actually diminishes the chances of seeing a Dragonlance book any time soon, IMO.
While I don't the the dragon-related UAs have anything to do with the release of a Dragonlance setting book, I think Dragonlance is definitely coming. There's a new Dragonlance trilogy coming out and you know that WotC is going to make game material to compliment that.

Connecting them to gem dragons, which don't appear in Krynn? No.

Reading that UA and saying "yep, Dragonlance" requires willfully skipping much of the actual UA. If we're going to do that, why not decide it's a Mystara or Greyhawk UA, both of which actually have kobolds and gem dragons? No one's doing that, because it's an obvious reach.

Once again, there's no need to be rude, Whizbang.

Yeah. The Gem Dragons don't fit. But Kobolds are actually a part of the Dragon Army. In the end, though, they're so inconsequential to the story that it doesn't actually matter one way or the other whether they get updated so it's neither here nor there in my estimation.

But we get it. You don't think it'll be the Dragonlance Book. You don't need to keep coming back to my replies to -other- posters to deride my various statements and poo poo any speculation that isn't "It's the Dragonomicon, no questions or discussion!"
