Some of those older players might be whales though and buy disproportionate amount of product using a MTG term.
Traditionally, the whales are 18-34: a stage of life where people have more money than when they are younger, andare more free with spending than when they are older. Hence all the TV and movie industry focus that demographic.
 

I was younger than 25 (13) when I started playing D&D, I don't see why it is so surprising. People between 25 and 50 are too busy with careers and family to spend much time playing D&D.

Might be different here they're all broke. Surging house prices (made worse by Covid) . If you're over 40 (35 minimum) bought a house 10+ years ago and are mortgage free things are great.

Rents have gone crazy (Seattle type prices nationwide).
 

We are talking about a generation who growed up with videogames, comics, books and movies, with Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and Warcraft, but maybe they knew nothing about the 80's cartoon, with Venger or Uni. This is not the generation who played World of Darkness but they were children for the years of D&D 3rd Ed, and videogames as Baldur's Gate or Newerwinter Nights.

Why the TTRPGs now? I guess Stranger Things and Critical Role also helped but in my opinion is the new players are bored with too many computer role-playing videogames where they only have to kill monsters and to loot to get better item and weapons. They are players who find in the TTRPG the perfect tool to write their own "amateur/fan-art" stories. They can create the characters they like, they can identify with, they can create worlds with their own homebred rules about limits of politically correctness.

They have discovered in the tabletop there are more social interactions, more "human heat", the feeling they are within in a cooperative team. The TTRPGs may be like a therapy for some players, where they can learn about the balance between self-criticism and faith in oneself.

This is a more recent development. In the past, young working adults had lots of disposable income. This Is no longer the case. I'm very conscious of how much easier I had it than my younger players do.

Man, tell me about it: graduated from college directly into the Great Recession. Still, D&D is a very affordable habit.
