I don’t disagree with that concept. I would just add that Identity is more about ones relationship to the world than the mechanical realities of ones existence.

a 6ft tall person is a giant beside a people that are normally 4ft tall.

a Battlemaster is a great warlord when viewed next to a champion fighter.

it’s only when a Battlemaster is viewed against the 4e warlord that his warlordness falls short.

by adding in a 4e style warlord you’ve removed that portion of the Battlemaster fighters identity - because the rest of the world matters.
Is the Wizard a worst class now that the Artificer is its own class??

I can see both sides of it. I think a better analogy is that a 5 foot person is a giant next to a 3 foot person, but it's still not really right to call the 5 foot person tall. While the Battle Master(and if you look in the PHB it's two words, both capitalized. Not sure why everyone here wants to make it one word :) ) is a far better Warlord than the Champion, he's still not a very good Warlord. People remember the good Warlord and want a class or subclass to represent that.

I get where you are coming from. But I’d say when there’s no other Warlord that he’s a dang good one because he’s the only one. It’s a matter of perspective IMO.

yeah, but people want the real thing not two things duck-taped together with a coat on top.
I think of it more like three Kobolds in a trench coat, but either way. My opinion is aided by my not caring a whit about the real thing. Also, there is no 'real thing' for 5E (obviously), which opens up a ton of annoying room for people to all argue for their own sacred cows. I'm not convinced there's room for a wholly separate Warlord without making a bunch of other adjustments to the class system generally anyway. That's me though, I'm not here to pee on people hopes and dreams for a new edition.
