D&D 5E Fizban's Treasury: The Dragon Book Now Has A Description... And A Feat

Courtesy of Amazon, we now have a description for Fizban's Treasury of Dragons, the October D&D hardcover. The book introduces gem dragons, dragon-themed player options, and plenty of draconic lore! This joins September's The Wild Beyond the Witchlight, and November's Strixhaven: Curriculum of Chaos.

At D&D Live this weekend, WotC will be revealing a lot more about all three books. It will be interesting to see if the Dragonlance-themed title means the book has Dragonlance content (I'm hoping for dragonlances and draconians, at least), and whether it settles that old argument of whether Paladine and Takhisis are actually Bahamut and Tiamat, or merely inspired by them.

(Warning: Dragonlance Chronicles spoilers in the cover text, if you haven't read those novels yet!)

As I explained upthread, due to some poor word order, what the announcement meant as multiple feats has been mistaken for only being one feat.
Considering how little player material has appeared in many books I would not of been surprised if it was the case. Also no Dragon Slayer subclass? Talk about missing low hanging fruit.

Sounds a little too specialised. Great when you're actually tracking or fighting a dragon, and pretty useless the other 95% of the time.

And you just know that if you build one, they'll ironically never manage to be the one who gets the killing blow against any draconic foe.

You can give bonuses that would be good against dragons that would be useful against other creatures. eg Bonuses againainst large + creatures, abilities vs high natural defence, eluding super sharp senses, bonuses Vs flyers, Defence vs elemental abilies. All these things and more would make for a good dragon slayer but be useful against many other creatures.

As a side note, I'm really disappointed that we didn't get more dragon themed subclasses in this book. Seriously, no Great Wyrm Warlock Patron!?!? Sure, it would be the most "complicated" Warlock subclass in the game if you did it right (and by that, I mean splitting the Expanded Spell List table into multiple different options for different sub-subclass choices, like how Genie Patron Warlocks get to choose one of the 4 different genie types to determine class features and spell lists added. You would at least have to do 15 different sub-subclasses, one for each of the true dragons, and detail spell lists and features that they get), but it would be freaking awesome!

What about an Eragon-inspired Dragon Rider Fighter subclass with a Tasha's-style Dragon Animal Companion?!?! Screw the Drakewarden, I want to be able to ride my dragon before level 15! I want my dragon to get different features dependent on what dragon type you choose! I want the dragon to be able to speak telepathically with me, and to have a magical "birthmark/dragonmark" that the dragon can enter as an extradimensional space! In depth tables and guidelines for your complicated and personal relationship with the dragon, like how they might mess up your dating life or act as a sort of "Shoulder Angel" (or maybe even Shoulder Devil!). I want a Charisma-based Fighter Subclass, goddammit! We have enough Intelligence based ones (EK, Psi-Warrior, Arcane Archer), now give some love to Charisma and Wisdom-based Fighter subclasses!

Or a Dragon-Rage Barbarian! Mixture of Path of the Beast and Path of the Totem Warrior where you gain different physical attributes based on what dragon you choose to exemplify during your rage (like a Sea-Serpent to get gills and a swimming speed, or a Wyvern to sprout wings, or a Drake to get a ferocious bite attack and burrow speed!). Let you speak Draconic so loudly and fiercely that you sound like a full-grown dragon and make people wet themselves in terror!

Dragon-Domain Cleric, anyone? Channel some Crystal-Dragon Jesus vibes by worshipping the dragonborns' Lord and Savior Sardior! Be the Murder-Hobo of all Murder-Hoboes as a leader of the Cult of Tiamat! Blind people with the shininess of your god-dragon-king's platinum scales as a Templar of Bahamut! Or Circle of Dragons Druid that transforms into dragons?

What about an update for the Draconic Bloodline Sorcerer that lets you be descended from a Gem Dragon and gives you Tasha's-style Always-Known spell lists?

I mean, seriously, who at Wizards of the Coast was assigned to create subclasses for a Dragon Sourcebook, looked over the classes in the game that don't have Dragon-based subclasses (so, all of them except Sorcerer), and said "hey! We should give Dragon subclasses to Monk and Ranger and no one else! Screw Fighters, Barbarians, and Warlocks! We're lettin' Monks breath fire and giving Rangers a cat-sized dragon that they get to ride if they ever make it to Tier-4 of the game!", and who in their right mind agreed with them?!?!

I love everything else about the book that I have heard so far, but this part still grates me. We could have had some of the most awesome subclasses possible added to the game, but instead we got a dragon-themed pokemon master Ranger and a "I punch with 5 Elements!" Monk. Oh well. Maybe if this book does well (which it will) they'll eventually add more draconic subclasses in the game. It just sucks that we're not getting a Dragon-Patron Warlock as cool as the Undead-Patron Warlock (Imagine how awesome it would be to have a Form of Dread-style Draconic Avatar feature for a Dragon-Patron Warlock! Summon the spectral aspect of your patron that protects you from harm with incorporeal dragon-scales and causing you to grow dragon-claws that you can tear your enemies' faces off with!).

Rant over. Just blowing off some steam. If only WotC had cool dragon subclasses in 5e, then this book would be perfect, IMHO.
This sounds like a perfect DMs Guild project. You got until October to get it ready for market.

I also wish there were more subclasses in Fizban's. At least a Great Wyrm Patron Warlock and a draconic Cleric or Paladin option as both would have made perfect sense to add to a book that could potentially expand the dragon pantheon for 5e.

I mean, yeah, I agree that it would make a good DMs Guild project, but I wish WotC did it so I didn't have to. And, if they did it, it would be official.
I've really rather warmed up to the idea that Dragons can serve as Patrons for just about all Warloxk Suvclasses, depending on the Dragon type, or a connection for any Class (order of Knights founded by a Silver, or a Red, Dragon for the Paladins? Thieves Guild run by a Black Dragon training Arcane Tricksters? A Tradition of Illusionists presided over by a Copper Dragon?)
