I think you may be onto something. We know we're getting settings in a heretofore unseen (in 5e) format. A boxed set containing a setting-specific player's guide, DM's guide, and monster book seems to fit that bill, as well as the $165 bill. I could see such a boxed set working well for Dark Sun, since a big part of its identity is lacking certain races and classes that are core in 5e, as well as having a lot of setting-specific new options for races and classes. And such a release would be a great place to expand on psionics... Damn, I hope this is it!
So if a table wants to play DarkSun, they'd have to purchase three books instead of one? Then another three books for another setting, and so forth?
I could certainly see the company being excited about that, but yikes! Not for me.

Assuming my theory is true, I suspect you're right - Dark Sun would be kinda perfect for that kind of treatment, in a way that most D&D worlds aren't.
Planescape does also seem like a viable candidate, especially if mashed up with Spelljammer. But I’ll keep my fingers crossed for DS.

I mean, you could look at it that way. But on the other hand, 3 times the books means 3 times the content. A lot of folks here have been pretty consistently dissatisfied by the amount of content in recent books, especially “X’s Guide to Y” style books that try to cram player options, DM options, setting info, and monsters all into one book. Make it three books and everything will have proper room to breathe. Maybe include a short adventure path in the DM book for some extra value.

On that metempsychosis tweak

Hey, you never know, a Dark Sun "setting in a box" supplement could even include a comprehensive system for psionics.

A man can dream.

I’m really hoping that it’s not Dragonlance
After 37 years of waiting, I’ve finally gathered a group large and keen enough to play the original for our next campaign
