Hiya!

Because your THAC0 would be 18, obviously. You need 18 to hit AC 0...you missed it by 6 (18 - 12), so...AC6. But Bolares meant "...or worse" (and just misstyped, I'm assuming...), because you didn't hit AC5, which is better (you would have needed a 13). Ergo, "I hit AC6 or worse".

Ah, I think I got it now (maybe). You would have a Thac0, and you would subtract your roll from it to see wich was the best AC you could hit?

Yup. Nailed it! :)

So, assuming THAC0 18...

...if your total roll was 12: You hit AC 6
...if your total roll was 19: You hit AC -1

Simple.

You don't even need to subtract. Take this example from the B/X character sheet. you'd have a row like this for each weapon. you simply roll, and look at what you hit. no adding or subtracting at all, since all of those numbers are figured out before hand (base thac0, bonus for magic or ability score, etc). So in this example below, if I rolled a 14, I immediately knew that I hit AC 2 or worse.

“It’s probably Matt Mercer’s fault.”
I'd be so immersed in my character that I wouldn't laugh, because my character doesn't know about THAC0.

Oh, is that all?
Yeah, it's no math required. But say I'm playing 5e and I have a 16 Strength, a +5 Proficiency Bonus, and a +2 Longsword. Then you just put this chart in your weapon:

AC>To Hit
10>2
11>2
12>2
13>3
14>4
15>5
16>6
17>7
18>8
19>9
20>10
21>11
22>12
23>13
24>14
25>15

See? No math required!
