Ah, I think I got it now (maybe). You would have a Thac0, and you would subtract your roll from it to see wich was the best AC you could hit?Hiya!
Because your THAC0 would be 18, obviously. You need 18 to hit AC 0...you missed it by 6 (18 - 12), so...AC6. But Bolares meant "...or worse" (and just misstyped, I'm assuming...), because you didn't hit AC5, which is better (you would have needed a 13). Ergo, "I hit AC6 or worse".

A trapeze flying clown named Professor A.C. "the Ascending" Calhoun, B.A.B.Has he been replaced by a younger, more popular clown named "the Ascending Ac"?
You don't even need to subtract. Take this example from the B/X character sheet. you'd have a row like this for each weapon. you simply roll, and look at what you hit. no adding or subtracting at all, since all of those numbers are figured out before hand (base thac0, bonus for magic or ability score, etc). So in this example below, if I rolled a 14, I immediately knew that I hit AC 2 or worse.Ah, I think I got it now (maybe). I would totally name a clown Attack Matrix in a sci-fi campaign. It would be a shoddily reprogrammed combat drone."It's not like they named a clown Attack Matrix."
The best D&D easter egg will always be the on on page 92 of the 3.5e Expanded Psionics Handbook.Isn't that called an Easter Egg nowadays? Like when they put THAC0 in the in the back of the 5e Player's Handbook so you could try sand look it up.
