Should D&D have an optional morale system spelled out in the DMG? Probably. But why does it matter if the NPC just saw there buddy get their head caved in or if their buddy disintegrated before their eyes? I have enemies run away ... umm ... retreat all the time. Seems like being set on fire in many ways is more terrifying that dropping in combat because you were hit by a weapon.

ToH is meant to challange the player not the character... I will use my phone and google all the answers... there we go, I can now know the right answers easy peasy. Gary couldn't have ever planed for modern internet

yeah, ToH would go like it does in Ready Player One (the book not the movie) where the protagonist downloads the module and speed runs it in minutes.

I've never had a problem with electronics at the table. But when my son's group (13 year olds) went to zoom (pandemic) and he was running rise of Tiamat, we caught one of the players literally looking at the module as my son was DMing!

I told him to frame his "don't do that!" in a "it's a lot less fun when you look at the module when we're playing..." and that seems to have worked, but who knows.

I agree with the theory I just reject that ToH would be fun if I knew it or not...

I am talking about running CoS for a group that not only has every person read that book, but all but 1 of us have run a previous edition version.

Stuff like this belongs in the Players Handbook, not the DMs Guide.

Also, social reactions, stealth rules, athletics rules, and so on, needs to be in the Players Handbook.

Everything one needs to run a game belongs in the Players Handbook.

Everything in DMs Guide is more about modifying the game.

The High Aldwin
give a no magic item fighter level 20 and a no magic item rogue level 20 (both can't have the subclasses that give magic) and CR 15+ monster and they don't stand much of a chance.

Give a warlock level 18 and cleric level 20 no magic items and put them against the same monster and see how different that fight goes...
LOL I don't care how you do it, odds are both groups are dead... ;)

interesting... I didn;t do any numbers I just went by gut instinct but the cleric and warlock can get around damage resist and immunity and the fighter rogue can't (taking the biggest boost they have the higher damage out) and the cleric can heal so i figure even if both groups loose the warlock/cleric party should hold there own longer...

edit: I just went to look and CR 15 is ALL over the place... mummy lord would most likly loose to both the spellcasting vampire or one of the dragons stands a good chance against either and the death tyrant laughs at both in eye rays...
