I know.

That is basically what FR is now, so they just repeated it with a different setting. They can do the same for GH.
The difference is that people seem to enjoy 5e FR, while they didn't seem to enjoy 3e/3.5e GH outside of The Sunless Citadel and The Forge of Fury, and most people just inserted those two adventures into their own homebrew settings instead (or ported them to the Realms).

The Realms has sticking power. It's had that since 1e AD&D. Not sure why it does versus Greyhawk, but it just does. I'm not sure Greyhawk can get by in the same way.

That is what most people do (or did, a lot of new people in the game now) with FR books to IMO. It is definitely what I do and will do no matter what the setting is going forward. I am pretty sure 5e Saltmarsh did pretty well it is a greyhawk book.

I skipped 3e/3.5e so I can't really give an opinion, but I have heard some say the reason for this was less external (customers) and more internal (no real support for the setting from WotC). I think if the make good adventures for GH they will sell just as well as they would for FR. Now perhaps they feel they have to much momentum with FR at this point, but I am thinking 2024 will be a soft reboot, so why not a new setting?

Yes, though because FR being open for business means all of these Realms are fair game. So we've got official adaptations of Chult and Icewind Dale (and the High Forest and The North and Anauroch as part of the Sword Coast book and Storm King's Thunder), plus semi-official 5e adaptations of Moonsea, The Moonshae Isles, Calimshan, The Border Kingdoms, Rasheman, and now Thay (each of the above are either major Adventurer's Guild locations, Guild Adept material, or covered in books written in part by Ed Greenwood).

Similarly, Eberron joining the Guild has allowed Keith Baker to publish semi-official 5e expansions that dive into more depth on various topics.

WotC doesn't need to "remember" more realms because the Guild does.

To my understanding, FR has been far and away the most popular kitchensink fantasy setting since it was published in 1e though, rapidly outpacing its kitchensink "competitors" Greyhawk, Blackmoor, Mystara, and Dragonlance. So while Greyhawk was chosen in 3e to be the core setting because of its legacy on the game, Forgotten Realms has gotten by on popularity first and foremost.

There's a reason they chose it as the core setting of 5e. I don't like it and prefer my homebrew setting and Nerath to it. But we're the minority, to my understanding.

I crit!
WotC afraid of dark? My last game I ran a little grey skinned girl who wears a putrid pigs face for a mask, and eats human flesh. A WotC creation. From their wimsical adventure Witchlight.

And we just got a huge fantastic Thay book from Ed Greenwood his very self. And frankly it’s amazing. Note that these are so official WotC changed the map of candle keep to match a brand new commissioned piece from the Ed Greenwood DMsGuild Candlekeep book. They themselves commissioned brand new cartography to boot. (Btw you should really get that DMsGuild Candlekeep book).

And I agree, if they open Greyhawk to the guild it’ll be amazing.

Though I think they should open prior editions too, especially if Luke can get access to write for Greyhawk

The majority is/was homebrew.
