D&D Movie/TV D&D Movie: Game of Thrones, Princess Bride, Holy Grail, The Goonies

Chris Pine, who stars in the upcoming (March 2023) Dungeons & Dragons movie has spoken about the film's influences in an interview with Collider (video below), describing it as 'poppy' and 'eighties heartfelt'.

“Oh man. Well, what I will say is we had a hell of a fun time making it. There was a lot of laughs. The way that I've been describing it, it's like Game of Thrones mixed with a little Princess Bride, just a smidge of Holy Grail; it's somewhere in that ballpark. It's a lot of fun. It's got a lot of thrills. It's poppy, it's eighties heartfelt, there's a bit of Goonies in there. My character, he's the ultimate party planner. I think it's going to be really good. I mean, who naughty word knows, but I think we got a good shot and John and John are killer guys. They know comedy and they know heart and we had a great cast and we had a good time making it. And that's all you can ask for.”

The movie also stars Hugh Grant as the bad guy, along with Michelle Rodriguez, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis, and Regé-Jean Page.

Stranger Things was produced for Netflix, and Dragon Prince. They have to find the right formula, and here even veterans of the cinematographic industry can fail some times. If the partnership with Paramount continues, maybe this produce the animated teleserie for its streaming service.

Pretty sure they're doing that too. WoTC is setting up to hit media hard.

Really MtG and D&D are their hottest settings right now. The GI Joe movies always seem to be a swing and a miss. Transformers is lost without Michael Bay. What do they have left? Board game stuff, which is not a great springboard for TV and Movie shows.

D&D & MtG settings include Spelljammers, Forgotten Realms (and it's subsettings), Dragonlance, Birthright, Planescape, Darksun, Ravenloft, Council of Wyrms, Mystara, Greyhawk, Eldraine, Ikoria, Keldhelm, Strixhaven (Arcvios), Theros, Alara, New Phyrexia/Mirrodin, Kamigawa, Tarkir, New Capenna, Ravnica, Dominaria, Lorwyn/Shadowmoor, Ghostwalk, Domains of Delight/Witchlight, Kaladesh, Old Phyrexia, Shandalar, etc..., no other Hasbro IPs have anything like that.

D&D is unique, since every single session generates IP. Playtest for q few hours? You got some fresh IP. Huge engine for storytelling material, as the Vox Machina cartoon demonstrated in a dynamic and innovative fashion.

Bayformers? Bleh.

The Bumblebee movie was excellent though. Probably because it lacked Bay.

Hope they take the hint from The Witcher
I appreciate the production value of The Witcher, so if that's what you mean then fair enough. But if you mean the writing, that show is kind of a mess for those who know nothing about the Witcher going into it. I know so many people who should like it but who walked away after a few episodes because of how confusing it was. I get that fans of the Witcher like the show, and I am happy those fans have a show they like. But it's not a good model for a general appeal fantasy movie or show in my opinion.
