Level Up (A5E) Question about Herbalism / Poisoner's Kit and Journeys

Stalker0

Legend
An Herbalism and Poisoner's kit both allow a character to gain some things after 1 hours work.

First question: Is there any restriction on time, or can a person do 8 hours of foraging and get to make 8 checks?

Second: In terms of journey activities, would a journey activity override this 1 hr ability, or could a play make the herbalism/poisoner's check AND do a journey activity in the same day?

They could technically do both, but they would have to sacrifice an hour of travelling time. The journeying activity you do while travelling.

Thank you sir. So on a typical day out in the forest, there is no limit on time spent = checks made correct? Aka I could spend 8 hours gathering poison if I really wanted to. (assuming a proper forest or something with plentiful fauna)

Like Morrus said, every check would require you to spend an hour wandering around and harvesting plants instead of doing something else, but if you have an entire day of downtime for whatever reason, you could certainly ask to make multiple checks. That's gonna require a whole lotta walking around, however. :D
It's a very time-consuming activity that requires a great deal of attention, and you're not likely to find most of what you'd be looking for growing along the side of a well-traveled road.

I'm not a big fan of multiple checks for the same task. Is it really the expectation that you roll for every hour spent?
I don't think there's any expectation that somebody would spend 8 hours doing that. That's kind of a corner case. I'd let the Narrator decide how to expeditiously resolve that.

If the basic assumption is that the one hour spent foraging lets the player roll to find enough materials to make x doses of poison or restock a kit or whatever, then if the player wants to invest enough time to ensure that it happens, it's probably easiest to just say it happens and make a decision how long that might take.
On the other hand, if they're planning to spend those eight hours gathering as much material as possible, then each hour spent foraging should probably be rolled for in order to determine how much they find.

Ah, I see. This ought to be a rare scenario. (I admit, I have perused the PDFs, but I haven't tried anything Level Up at the table yet - I'm waiting for the "real" books to show my players.)

I don’t think it’s as rare as people think.
If your doing non stop adventuring in your campaign, then sure. But I feel that a good amount of games have breaks between adventurers or a bit of downtime periodically. And so yeah it’s wouldn’t be hard at all to have pockets full of poison or special herbs.
