D&D General The Problem with Talking About D&D

The interesting thing about Colville's video is that he is indeed, very very correct... but it's also not a super illuminating take? It largely boils down to "each table is different, so a lot of the rules aren't universally useful." Which I think everyone knows.

I guess the most important point (and it's implied in the title) is that when talking about D&D you need to mention the context. So if you give a review of a module, you should say "Hey it worked for my table, which is made up of these players who..."
Oh, I'm going to disagree here.

Not everyone knows that. It's very, very apparent that not everyone knows that. One only has to look at posts like "5e players ____" or "The game is on easy mode" or various other very broad judgements to see just how much people really don't know that.

Sigh. Yeah, it does. And the devs have said they balanced PC resources around 6-8 combats per day. Further proof that nobody reads that section of the DMG or pays attention to the devs.

How cute and glib. Crack open the DMG, and you will see that in the very next sentence after it describes 6-8 Med / Hard encounters, it immediately says that more easier encounters or fewer harder ones are equally valid options.
