D&D General NFTs Are Here To Ruin Dungeons & Dragons

If there is curiosity about why many are so angrily opposed to this business model gaining any legitimacy or traction, it is simply this: I am not worried about Gripnr. I am worried about Hasbro. If you don't think Hasbro is watching this, watching to see if they can find a new way to monetize this hobby, then you are already a mark. The line must be drawn here. No. As a community. No. Never. Gaming is already money gated for many people. No more gates.

Well, WotC already put the smackdown on Magic NFTs...

While gaming CAN get expensive (miniatures, terrain etc.) at its core the hobby is extremely reasonable compared to many others (golf etc.).

Think about the cost expenditure per session - it's a few dollars, including snacks, usually less than going out to a movie with friends!

I think that would be banking WAY to much on people wanting imaginary stars on their belly. Then again people have made more selling the public less!
Agreed. And to be fair, I think the market for such a service is limited. I personally wouldn't give a fig if my PC was the official one that completed the Tomb of Annihilation, and I certainly wouldn't care enough to buy the one who did. But I'm trying to rationalize a system where someone might.

That said, any sell plan that involves "get as big as Dragonlance or CR" isn't probably going to work, Blockchain or no.

As someone who is a lifelong DM and has worked with a charity that aims to bring young people with limited means into the hobby, trust me, there is a money barrier. Is it as bad as many other hobbies? Oh no. CCGs spring to mind that's in the geek sphere. Same with wargaming. But even with low costs on the average, someone, like a DM, often spends more. Mind you, that is also why I do wish we had a culture of players subsidizing their GM's pernicious book/accessory habits...

Are you honestly saying you don't think it can be done with renewables? Do you honestly think there is any difference in the nature of electricity generated by burning coal vs that generated by a solar panel? There isn't.
Energy production is finite. To manage its impacts on our planet, we need to not only increase renewables on the supply side, we need to do all we can to decrease usage on the demand side. If a NFT company builds a solar farm to power its NFT farm, that solar farm could have been built to contribute to more essential/efficient energy needs.
Raping the planet is certainly not a good thing. However, that is figure of speech, not an actual act of sexual violence, unlike those involved with #MeToo. I find it seriously disturbing that I've had to point out essentially this same distinction multiple times in this thread.
Rape, while a loaded word to many, is a legitimate term to use in this case. Dictionary.com gives the third definition of the word rape is "an act of plunder, violent seizure, or abuse; [synonyms]: despoliation; violation [example usage]: the rape of the countryside."

I fully believe that they're watching, but that they would realistically go forward with it, that I seriously doubt. Hasbro has a good thing going with WotC, and crypto is contentious at best (as this thread clearly shows). It would be high risk for indeterminate reward, which would fall somewhere along the spectrum between an idiotic and an utterly ruinous business decision. I honestly don't think that this is something we need to be seriously concerned about. This company wants to sell characters for approx $300 a pop. Are you realistically concerned that their business model will be successful, because I'm not.

Yes, this. The big corporations are still waiting to see if Crypto really has legs before taking a risk on it. We really, really don’t want the future where they decide it’s worth diving into to come to pass. We have to nip this garbage in the bud.
