WotC's Jeremy Crawford has announced a new Unearthed Arcana article today with redesigns from the prior Heroes of Krynn UA based on feedback, and in the following video he discusses that feedback and what's in the article:
  • New iteration of Kender based on feedback survey, due to mixed response. This time is a back to basics, aiming to capture 1E AD&D fearlessness, curiosity and taunting skills. Delve into their origins from Gnomes in deep history.
  • Kender are no longer fey creatures who grab objects from the Feywild
  • Tweaked Feats from prior article
  • Tweaked Backgrounds from prior article
  • Brand new rule giving a list of free Feats for ANY Background
  • Free Feat rule for Level 4 for all characters that doesn't take the ASI away, based on a curated list
  • Reveals that in the Adventure, healing magic is already back.

I understand this and pretty much ignore alignment completely in favor of traits and personality when I play. I also don't really care what the PCs put down on their sheets. However...

...this is true, but after a few such evil acts such a white robed wizard would be booted from the club and would be a renegade if he didn't join the black robes. Same with the reverse and a black robed wizard being a good guy.
It's been a few years since I read the Dragonlance novels. Do you lose your powers if you're rejected from one of the groups? Can you not just be like a Gray Jedi that acts outside of the rules but still has their powers? Could you not just continue to wear your robes?

IIRC, they are very...proactive...on dissidents.

Renegades are hunted down and you either join the club or are killed. Until then, yes, you would be a wizard with all your powers who is outside the organizations.

So, it strikes me that the Strixhaven Backgrounds are power equivalent with these optiinss: it could work to do a homebrew kit bash pseudo-Krynn with an alternate universe War of the Lance, but forgetting all of that Golden tablst jazz and making Strixhaven the Towers of High Sorcery instead....

...

Hmmmmmmmm...

So there could be a good Black Robe Mage or evil White Robe Mage if they just managed to survive. They just wouldn't actually technically be a member of the organizations anymore, would be in the process of being hunted down, and would be probably the only one of their kind.

🤷‍♂️
Sounds like an adventurer's backstory to me. Your adventuring party could help you survive. Or they could be an antagonist that one of the orders sends the party to hunt down.

Yes and no. Black Robe tm, White Robe tm, and Red Robe tm are like the Elk's Lodge. You're an Elk whether you are wearing the uniform or not, and someone who is not an Elk does not become one just by wearing the Elk's hat.

A renegade wizard will draw their magic from the appropriate moon, so an evil "white robe" would draw his power from Nuitari, but he would not be an evil White Robe, because he has been booted from a club. This is true even if he continues to wear white robes.

Could be, but they have a lot of high level wizards, so unless you are starting high level, it's pretty much a death sentence. They know your strengths and can find you.

Don't you have to be caught to be booted from the club.
I would think so. They aren't omniscient. Perhaps the moons contact them to say, "Hey guys! There's this guy over here who is part of the White Robe Lodge, but he's pulling the wings off of flies and murdering unicorns for sport. You might want to boot him.", but I doubt it.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. There would be members who were not proper fits for the Orders they joined, but unless actively reported or seen to be going against it's ideals they would not be kicked out, and many of them would still think they are doing the proper thing for their order.
