Run and hide was always Orbril the gnomes first tactic

Nonetheless he was also an alchemist (before alchemist was a seperate class) so had a bandolier and sack full of oil, acid vials, holy water, ball bearings, alchemist fire, tanglefoot bags and antitoxin. Plus Sling stones and a hand crossbow and later bombs, poisons etc
And with Mage Hand you can deliver the ball bearings wherever you want.

Or dump an overturned bucket on top of someone's head to blind them!
Sadly there is no reason to touch the crossbow or any other weapon. Your attack cantrips will be better than any weapon you could use, so you just pew-pew with your magic lasers like in a video game.
But a NES one where you die in one or two hit and there's no continues.

If your Dex and Int are both 16, then a crossbow is superior to any cantrip at that level. If your Dex is 14, then a crossbow is roughly on par. (Fire bolt is +5 to hit and 1d10, crossbow is +4 to hit and the equivalent of 1d12. Toll the dead is generally superior to fire bolt, but I'm not sure how often that advantage would hold at 1st level when your foes are almost as fragile as you are.)

True. Assuming you have great dex, it is only at the 5th level you can toss your weapons away.

I wonder if they should have made a cantrip that increased the effectiveness of thrown or ranged weapons slightly, so Wizards still had to carry them around.

Sort of a ranged shillelagh or something...
