D&D 5E What is Quality?

Oh, as if both sides of this argument aren't cherry picking left, right and center? Come on, dude.
IMHO, I'm not sure if reducing this to a "both sides" is fair to anyone and the diversity of opinions in this thread, and I'm skeptical that there is a "both sides" here at all. Because one can see in this thread, for example, people who believe that (a) 5e is a quality game and its popularity is useful metric of its quality; (b) 5e is a quality game, but its popularity is not a useful metric of its quality; (c) 5e is not a quality game despite its popularity; etc. Plus add into this mix differences of opinion on the question of objective vs. subjective metrics to ascertain a product's quality.

I know, but I'm trying to hold people to the same standard. The one about 4e being the best selling edition so far (or whatever, which is the point) keeps getting thrown around, and quite frankly it is meaningless (bordering on genuinely detracting/counterproductive) without actually being able to see what was claimed.
there are two... here is one someone else had both a few months ago but I don't seem to have saved it

A WotC spokesperson has informed ICv2 that Dungeons & Dragons 4th Edition has already gone back to press more than a week before its scheduled street date next Friday, June 6th. Sell-in of 4th Edition has “far exceeded expectations” and even though the initial print run for 4th Edition was 50% higher than the order for the previous D&D 3.5 Edition, WotC has now realized that it is necessary to go back to press to meet anticipated reorder demand.

Earlier this week reports indicated that Buy.com was breaking the street date and shipping copies of 4th Edition (and that 4th Edition elements were available as Bit Torrent downloads, see “D&D 4E Out Early”), clear evidence of the highly anticipated nature of D&D 4th Edition.

Sell-in for 4th Edition turned out to be considerably higher than for 3.5 and the number of pre-orders keeps rising. The D&D 4E Core Rulebook Gift Set made it up to #5 on Amazon.com’s rankings today (Amazon appears to be observing the June 6th street date).

what you will NEVER find is anything pre 2021 (last time i looked) where wotc said they were under selling

That's like saying the Oxford English Dictionary and Seuss' On Beyond Zebra are both books. I submit that, "automobile" is too broad category over which to assert a single valid concept of quality over the entire group.
Maybe. Maybe the same is true of RPGs as well.

Can we at least say that same books, some cars, some RPGs, etc are of lesser quality than other ‘categorically similar’ ones? Can we agree that popularity is not a great guide to determining the quality of categorically similar products?

So, you want to argue the quality of my categorization? :)

Riddle me this - are you treating it as an automobile, a Ferrari, or a Kia?
Personally, I prefer my Kia Rondo. 7 years and still going. It has no rust, is in perfect mechanic order and I can use it to its full potential. A Ferrari goes fast, but we are limited to 100km/h on highways any ways... those 225 additional km/h are worth nothing to me. ;)
