D&D 5E What creatures would you use for this...

What creature/monster types would you use against a party of 3-4 adventurers (within the bracket of 4th-6th level-ish), who had to defend a farmhouse against waves of attackers and any advice of how you would run it?



The farmhouse is by a small river with a waterwheel connected and there is a bridge that goes across to the house. There are open fields and a forest where the majority of the attacks are coming from and I envisage a monster Special Forces attack from the river or bridge at some point during the night.



Dog Soldiers, Assault on Precinct 13, Zulu, 13th Warrior and potentially Sharpe’s Waterloo as inspiration for this one-shot.



Ps Goblinoids and Gnolls are kind of out. I have just done a load of those. So what creature types/groups would you find interesting?

Any time someone says waves of attackers I think about undead. So you could always go that route.

You could really take on the dog soldiers theme and do lycanthropes. Possible with waves of the following:

• wolves (CR 1/4)
• dire wolves (CR 1)
• werewolves (CR 3)

and a final wave / boss:

• loup garou (CR 13)

Maybe a demon portal opened nearby. (Waves of demons)

Or a hag or warlock is corrupting the local wildlife. (Waves of various beasts)

Actually after I said Bullywugs, I thought Bullywugs with a Greenhag would be cool. then you’ve got waves of frogs, giant frogs, striges, crocolian Polywugs and of course A Froghemoth ultimate boss fight

my first thought was also zombies, natural fit, chuck in some scarecrows to o

My default was going to be undead but ooh Bullywugs! I can see them stealth-swimming and using the waterwheel to get to the roof while the diversion of the giant toads or whatever try to attack from the front.

This gives me lots to think about. Thanks!
