D&D Movie/TV Here's The D&D Movie Trailer!

"Who needs heroes when you have thieves?" The movie arrives March 3rd, 2023. Here's the trailer! When they said it was inspired by Guardians of the Galaxy, they weren't kidding! We have dragons, owlbears, mimics, gelatinous cubes, quips, and more!

There was also a clip shown at San Diego Comic Con where the party cast speak with dead, and got to ask five questions. Also, apparently, the D&D cartoon characters from the 80s have a cameo!

While Marvel as a corporate entity is gleefully rolling in cash from the MCU, I wonder how much of it has translated back into people buying the comics? Cos, I mean, I'll be happy if the D&D movies is successful and gets a broader audience than just pre-committed D&D fans, but what I mostly want from it, and any spin-offs, TV shows, etc etc, is to recruit a bunch of new players to the hobby.
Impossible to tell what the effect will be to the hobby right now. But it will probably be different from the MCU's impact on people buying comic books. Reading comic books is a pretty different hobby from playing a TTRPG (even though there is a lot of overlap in the fanbases). If people see a D&D movie that looks fun and hear that they can do similar things to what happened in the movie at home with a group of friends, I imagine that could have quite a big impact on the hobby. The source material for Honor Among Thieves is a game, while the source material for the MCU is comic books. They're really different beasts, and as far as I'm aware, this is the biggest movie based on a TTRPG ever.

If this movie succeeds and increases the popularity of D&D a lot, you'll probably see other similar companies trying to replicate the success. Maybe a Call of Cthulhu or Warhammer movie?

Would LOOOOOVE a Warhammer (or better yet, Warhammer 40K) feature movie. I would watch the HELL out of that.

But, while I'm not sure all the MCU stuff has driven comic book sales, I think it's fair to say that it certainly hasn't hurt. :D According to my half assed Google search, I found this site: Comichron: Yearly Comic Book Sales - which lists total value of the comic industry (not including, I think movies and whatnot - just comic books) and we've gone from around 300 million in 1998 to just under 2 BILLION in 2020, so, I'd say that it seems to have helped. :D

I wouldn't mind seeing a 10 times growth in the market over the next twenty years. That would make me a very happy gamer.
