IIRC LMoP came with a high elf evoker wizard, lightfoot halfling thief and hill dwarf life cleric as well. Can we compare these to those and see if there are any mechanical differences?

There aren't. The spell selection is different, there are some equipment differences, and the new pre-gens lack Ideal, Bonds, and Flaws. But you could make these characters using the SRD from 2014.

Interesting. I think that just goes to show that either they chose not to have this Starter Set preview any of the rules changes or it was produced too far in advance to incorporate any of them.

Can you tell us if the pre-gens have powers or abilities that recover on a short rest?

They do (the wizard has Arcane Recovery, for example). Really, nothing in the pre-gens or in the bestiary really reflects any of the recent changes (the alignments of creatures does say "typically" such-and-such, but that's about it). There are kobolds, they have the same sunlight sensitivity as always, etc.

Or there aren't any changes here to reflect.

Backgrounds not having Traits, Ideals and bonds is a trend I've noticed in newer products, like Strixhaven.

Given the fact that all recent subclasses and races eschew short rest abilities, it was a reasonable hypotesis to think that they would have been replaced from the "core" for the 2024 revision.

Yeah, and honestly they still might. But I don't think thst rheubwill get rid of Short Rests entirely.

I think folks might be reading a lot into this as a herald of things to come. From a marketing standpoint, I think the main reason this set exists is that the previous two boxes sold well at Target, and Target wanted a new box to put in the shelves and paid WotC enough for the exclusive to make it worth doing.

So, we know from WotC that this is designed to remain the Starter Set for onboarding in the 2024 revision era. So if there are rules here with no obvious changes...those rules are not going to change in 2024, either. That is telling.
or they just aren't sure what will and what wont change yet... they may have no real idea of what 2024 brings then we do.

We've already seen the outlines for their Monster and race changes, and the Background with a Feat change (apparently also in Spelljammer, per Roll20). I thinkntheybhave a pretty good idea about rule changes. Classes are the big Wildcard. I would like to see big changes to some, like Monk, Barbarian, Warlock or Ranger, but time will tell.
