I demand that my game with a giant snail flying through space be given all the respect it deserves!
Good news: it has been!
A lot of White Zombie/Rob Zombie music could fit the vibe of scary clowns….

“Meanwhile, behind the façade of this innocent looking bookstore…”

Serious odd how much the lyrics of Cosmic Monsters, Inc. fit this creature.
That line itself is a sample form the first episode of the '60s Batman TV show.

So yeah, it all tracks, and it all works.

Wasn't one of the big problems with circuses animal protection laws? They did things to animals we no longer accept, and when the laws protected animals more, they lost a lot of their acts?
Welfare issues aside, the attraction was that the animals were unfamiliar and exotic. These days everyone knows what a tiger looks like.

Fundamentally, the big circuses were on the way out before they had to lose the animals. The major issues are twofold: 1)overhead (cost of people, cost of transit, cost of venue, insurance), and 2) electronic entertainment both competing as an entertainment source and driving down the amount people are willing to pay for a day's entertainment. Same two issues live theater, tourist historical sites, ren fairs, and local amusement parks are having.
I think its fair to say that Le Cirque du Soleil, Flip Fabrique, etc arent the type of circuses discussed here. There's a difference between acrobatic theater performance and roadside shows based on animal cruelty and cheap humor.
The performing arts part of circuses are just another form of someone else doing something exceptional that I can't do for my amusement (that for historical reasons got fused with the circus circuit instead of the theater, vaudeville, or musical touring circuits). There's not particular reason why we should limit ourselves to wanting to see such things when it is acting or making music.
