Refusing to say, "I check the door for traps," instead of "I roll Investigate! ::clatter::" seems like like a weird hill to die on.
just like to us forcing someone to say "I check the door for traps" when they just said "I roll Investigate" clatter... seems like a weird hill to die on.

I don't know that I would refuse to say what you want... but when I default to saying something YOU don't like you will stop the flow of the game and try to get people to phrase it differently... and that seems weird.

where I somewhat agree, I also know that me and the guys make jokes (some good some bad some not even in good taste) soo I would assume that such a crazy thing was a joke.

In my group? Sure. We actually like and respect each other and it would be a joke (though the lose a turn aspect would NEVER happen).

But the poster clearly intended this to be some humiliation/DM power play. And that's neither funny or ok. And it makes me sad that players have to experience such nonsense.

right... it would be a joke and after we all laughed they would get there turn.

With so many forum-warriors routinely threatening to leave all the hypothetical tables in a self-righteous huff of indignation, it's truly a wonder that the hypothetical game-tables still have any hypothetical players at all.

You're post displayed one of the most toxic examples of DM behavior I have encountered in a while, which is saying a lot. And you stated you've actually done it at your table - so it's not a hypothetical, you actually put a player through it. It's sad you think that's funny.

I honestly don't know how to get you to understand that positioning matters (among other things), and that players don't just throw dice without being asked to.
