I really hope you're wrong that they've dropped the plans, because I was really interested to see what a new, modern-sensibilities D&D setting might look like.
Me too, but all the way back in 2021 Winninger did say that the new setting might get canned, and that this was always a risk, and that seemed like some pretty clear expectation management. Or maybe it's fine and dandy and just got bumped to 2024 to go with the core book re-releases as a setting that incorporates all elements of them (including Aardlings, if they make it through the playtest, which I expect they will though perhaps renamed). I do think that might be the ideal time for a full-on new setting.

Based on how they handled Spelljammer, I don't think you have to worry about that...
Spelljammer missed out on being a great product by about 15 - 20 pages. As is, it's still fairly decent. As I've said on other threads, where I show a picture of the set I just purchased, dump the DM screen to gain about 32 pages, and it would have been very good.

The ''OMG lawful good black robes'' is so disingenuous! Nobody spoke of Lawful Good black robes but the ones attacking any decision by WotC to remove weight to alignment. Its a total strawman.

They just removed the alignment restriction on them. In a game where I can already play a Chaotic Good Conquest Paladin, a Lawful Good Assassin, a Chaotic Evil Peace Cleric, a Neutral Good Necromancer etc
It's not a strawman. These are followers, worshipers, of the God of Evil Magic.

The Wizards were (as far as I can remember) the only ones who continued to have faith in the 3 gods of Magic.

It is utter nonsense to worship an evil god, practicing dark Magic, as a "x Good" character.

I'd say Necromancer falls into the same realm, but you could chalk that up to a cultural thing.

The Black Robes either are not Good, or it's simply a retcon of the setting we had.

All true but let’s be honest, Dalamar was only evil in the “sarcastic buddy” way. He ended up working with the good guys an awful lot.

Then Assassin, Peace Cleric, and Conquest Paladin should, by that same logic, have alignment restriction?

And arent ''Dark magic'' in DL just certain restrictions on spell schools in the past setting books?

And the gods are said to be gone/distant, so I dont think worshipping is the right word here. Following the precept of ''black magic'' under a the auspice of a magical moon, maybe, but there nothing religious/sacred in their following. Just look at how they switch between the color of their robes. They are closer to political/power factions in-game than cults. Like the different color of Jedi, really.

But its been a while since I read the book. Yet, Raistlin did not strike me a disciple of a dark god, more of dude with an agenda and love of dark magic.
The wizards are very closely tied to the three gods of magic in Krynn, it’s not really a debate.

Sure, but (again it's been a long time) he was apprentice to the guy who was certainly willing to perform pretty much any evil.

Yeah man, maybe dial back the vitriol (@Tales and Chronicles) a bit. I just asked a question.

As for the whole lawful good black robes issue, I personally think it make zero sense within the established lore of the world, but WotC is of course completely free to do what they want with the setting. As I mentioned earlier, I love the first 3 Dragonlance books and probably always will. I’ve never really wanted to play D&D in the setting though, for me Dragonlance is all about reading those first 3 books and loving everything about them. Those will always be Dragonlance to me.
