I wonder how their acquisition of Beyond and digital plans will affect things like Beyond 20, a web browser extension that let you use D&D Beyond with Roll20?

We can only hope they don't kill it. I don't think they will, because plenty of people pay for content on DNDbeyond and use it with other VTTs. That market isn't getting smaller....

That said, I really hope their VTT is reasonably priced and works as well as that demo looks.

In the short term? I wouldn't expect it to matter at all. My understanding is that the WotC VTT is in motion, but realistically years away yet.

Longer term, I still figure they'd not muck with it much - customer impressions matter. If they chop off other platforms, they'll cheese off players on those platforms - players they'd generally want to entice to use their VTT. You can't do that if they are angry with you.

And its safe to use since it only allows you to work with the content you paid for not anything more.

If you mean that D&D Beyond doesn't leak content you don't own into your games, um, well that's not true.

Beyond has very poor content control, and if have anyone who is a DM at all, and has content-sharing on, as a player in any of your games, his content will be shared with you, whether you like it or not.

Beyond repeatedly promised to improve this but they repeatedly promised a lot of things, basically none of which have happened. They even laid out a really detailed plan for how it would work at one point, how you could select sources and stuff, and then just absolutely nothing happened.

If they end up being "the only game on town", it won't matter if they anger players.

I could see them eventually making all other VTTs incompatible with D&D Beyond.

I mean, it will.

Because people aren't tied to only playing D&D, and if WotC can do this, I guarantee that Paizo or someone else can do a budget/indie version that actually may well work even better (you see this in games all the time) as a VTT, even if it's not quite as pretty. If they do and don't monetize it as abusively as WotC are likely to, well, they're going to steal quite a lot of customers, esp. as PF2 arguably plays better on a VTT than a tabletop (unlike 5E, which definitely does not).

It'll be a slow leak, like a bike tire, but they'd definitely lose subscriptions and sales if people felt like they were being abusive in that way, stealing from them, even.

I just meant that if you dont own the content or its not shared then it should be fine. So hopefully there is no reason to block something like that extnetion or anything else that uses DDB API's
