D&D General Would It Matter To You if D&D Books Were Illustrated by AI Instead of Humans?

I agree, but for now it’s a huge negative. In theory AI could be an incredible tool for artists. But in a world driven by the pursuit of profit, it’s inevitably going to end up being used to cut costs.

Yeah, and I’m definitely in favor of those things. But since the question was about an RPG book using all AI generated art, no, that’s not something I would be in favor of within our current economic climate.

My 2c: i started a topic some time ago in order to understand the reasons to have artworks in rpg books. The outcome is that while for settings and/or modules there is a true need (to transmit the feel and the mood of an invented venue), for a rule book i am still looking for a good reason...
Back to the first point, i do feel that the purpose of it, this is strictly tied to the final goal of art, therefore you do need an artist who is able to provide the readers with emotions. My first thought goes therefore towards artworks done by artists. I then think that with AI it is simply a matter of time. Therefore i am not sure what is my opinion as we are looking at the first steps of this movement... I wonder in a year if any of us will be able to detect an AI image from a human one...
Last thought: for a small print/indie publisher, no question asked!

For Dalle and other text-prompted images, it is known issue that the constructed images tend to be racist, sexist, antigay, and so on.

Any AI that relies on the internet for data ends up being somewhat evil.

Of course, this criticism is about the human source, the things people say on the internet and the images they post.

The AI is merely an echo of what humans are doing.

Funny: it is nor AI neither internet... We are racist, sexist and so forth... This is the true finding... I wonder what could be the first though of AI about us once it will be able to think...

Absolutely. I do think it will be good for small creators that aren’t visual artists, though.

Based on my very limited experience playing around with AI-generated art, for my part the real-human artists have nothing to worry about yet; as thus far I've found AI art - including the examples posted in this thread - to be across-the-board hideous.

It's probably inevitable that AI will come to be used to add illustrations and, probably later, text to RPG works. Initially, this will be to fill in some of the blanks, allowing the human creator to focus on the "big stuff", but as time goes on it will gradually shift to all-AI works.

I wouldn't say I'm okay with it, but my concerns aren't really RPG-related - society has some big questions to sort out regarding the consequences of AI and other automation replacing human labour in a great many fields.

My main contention is that none of these algorithmically generated things should be called AI. Because they aren’t any sign of artificial intelligence. Even when it “works” it is not because the computer understood anything about what it was doing.

It would not particularly bother me, but I generally don't care about the artwork to begin with. The only artwork that's particularly important IMO is in the MM.
