D&D (2024) Taking a healing potion as a bonus action?

I do swift action to drink in PF1, which is roughly analogous (although not exactly, since getting it in your hand in the first place is different - you are much more likely to have other uses for your move action in PF1 than your interact-with-an-object in 5e).

Inthink it’s a common house rule…on enworld. I doubt a majority of tables use it, but frankly there is probably no house rule that a majority of tables use.

I do use it myself and I really like the rule.
Critical Role uses it, so it's at least well-known in the wider community. I've never seen anyone survey about it, though.

I have recently shifted to having potions being drinkable on a bonus action. Gives PCs more options with their bonus action and I hoping that it will help encourage the use of potions in general.

Though admittedly, making all potions purchasable (for a reasonable price) could also make them more viable options.
You'd think so but the ability to nullify damage at no cost is too valuable of a tool. IME players still just use them as a standin for healing word regardless of the action economy cost.

My experience is that this does happen. Taking an action to enlarge yourself is never worth it, but for a bonus action it's a matter of when to use the potion.

And the only healing that counts is the healing that takes you from 0 hp (because negatives don't exist) to 1 hp, where upon a character regains the ability to make their full actions.

I hear this enough that it must not come up as much in other peoples games, but healing to single digits, while it makes the player useful, is often more dangerous than being unconscious. I’m not big on targeting unconscious players, but I do have to go after anyone standing and single hp territory is where a failed save or monster crit could be massive damage and not leave you any death saves.
