D&D General Dragon+ Content Going Away -- Whoops, It's Gone!

WotC's online ezine, Dragon+, ended a few months ago. Until now the existing issues were still accessible, but as of today, November 15th, WotC announced that "Dragon+ will be removed from app stores on or around November 15th, and dragonmag.com will be redirected and its content will no longer be available". If you wanted to save any of the content, do it quick, because it goes away today...

[Edit -- and the content is now gone].

Earlier this year we announced that the current issue of Dragon+ will be its last. Dragon+ will be removed from app stores on or around November 15th, and dragonmag.com will be redirected and its content will no longer be available.

I'm sure you're right that there was more stuff than I remember. Still, I recall being increasingly disappointed by the "magazine". Initially I was pretty excited for a regular publication, but it seemed increasingly pointless over time. I honestly can't think of anything I'd miss if I can't access it.

Not so, when it comes to the classic Dragon mag!

I think this was most peoples reaction. And frankly as much as I liked some of the stuff in it even I didn't go often and stopped checking for new issues. I'd bet the traffic dropped to next to nothing.

We see in this a major drawback to content that's not really ours...that is, stuff we access via streaming or logins is really not ours. Kindle books, online music, this...if it's not on your HD alone, or your record shelf, or your bookcase, it's not yours and you can't truly control when you can access it - or if at all - or what the content will be if you do access it.

I prefer traditional ownership. You write it; I'll buy it. If you want to go back on what you wrote, tough...I bought it and can keep it.

This is why I always buy the books I want as books and NEVER count on digital subscriptions. I still reference all my old material for stuff like monsters that I want to convert, lore I want to use, ideas I want to steal, etc.

I know lots of people who used online material only who will never get to re-read, for example, 4e's Open Grave to see how cool the osteopede was, or to get ideas for 5e epic boons based on epic destinies.

Bah humbug! Back in my day all we had was dirt. And we were happy to have that because, it's just dirt. None of that fancy-pants artisanal loam for us, no sirree. Dirt pies, dirt fortresses, dirt fights. And we were thankful for that dirt by gum! Now get off my lawn!

I mean, other than that, I agree. You could play for years with a little imagination and the free resources.
Had to do a double take, for a second I thought diaglo was posting again.

I remember flipping through a couple Dragon+ and not finding anything worth remembering. Are there any articles or content people remember from Dragon+ standing out that would be worth hunting down?

Since I actually kept track of this for a while for the 5E monster list on the D&D Lore Wiki, I can point to some standouts. (Though I can't vouch for objective quality, didn't read them all.) The PDFs for most still seem to be available, for now.
  • Belaphoss, the big bad from Sword Coast Legends (PDF still available).
  • If you're a fan of The Adventure Zone, they did a tie-in adventure (PDF still available).
  • A solo adventure, Frozen Offerings (PDF still available).
  • Dragon rats (PDF still available).
  • The Crypts of Kelemvor adventure (PDF still available).
  • Nicholas the Gift-Giver (PDF still available).
  • Chronicle of the Plain of Shale, a tie-in short story for Planescape: Torment (accompanying 5E bestiary PDF still available).
  • Havoc orb (PDF still available).
  • The Imminent Light, sidequest cut from Descent Into Avernus (PDF still available).
  • Feast of the Nightwalker, adventure hook (associated PDFs still available: main, Order of Shadows, Zashtii, Malthraxis, apparently related NPCs from previous issue).
  • Minions - yes, those Minions (PDF still available).
  • Snapdax, Apex of the Hunt, MTG Ikoria tie-in (PDF still available).
  • Spider shark, HasCon monster building contest winner (no PDF, but preserved on Internet Archive).
  • Terror of Undermountain (PDF still available).
  • 5E stats for Vlaakith the Lich-Queen (PDF still available).

Wait, what...? Just like that? Dammit, I have not even seen the latest issue. Mind you, I was only checking it for the art and the previews, but there were some nice concept art pieces in there.
I guess the time of magazines, even online ones, is over, with the Beyond/OneD&D slimey ooze absorbing them all with a loud slurping noise.
