D&D (2024) Racial sub-class brainstorm.

mellored

Legend
So with all the sub-classes being at set levels, that opens the door for cross-class sub-classes.

So what are some racial sub-classes / features you would like to see? Is there any particular 4e racial paragon path that you want to see return?

I rather liked the Goliath one in 4e. It gave extra reach, polearm master, and large size.

And with them being more giant connected in 5e, I think that would work really well.

I imagine something like

3: when you take a short rest, you regain 1 use of your giants ancestry feature.
6: you regain your large form feature when you take a short rest.
10: your reach increases by 5'.
14: you can use your large form feature at will.

Scion of Moradin
3: Once per day, regain PB HD and shed ongoing poison, stun, paralyzed as an Action
6: Improved Tremor Sense
10: 15 feet of burrow speed
14: CON+1 damage DR, advantage on forced movement and prone.

Where there racial prestige classes?
In 3.0? Yes, the Dwarven Defender for one. May have been others in splat books in 3.0; I seem to recall a halfling pony rider. Unfortunately, I unwisely sold all my 3.0 books during 3.5, despite playing not really playing in 3.5 (had kids, wasn’t until 4e that they were old enough that I no longer felt guilty leaving my wife alone).

There were also "substitution levels" for some classes based on race, that functioned similarly to subclasses, such as the Elven Generalist Wizard.

Some of the prestige classes include:

Ancestral Avenger (Elf or Half-Elf) Dragon #279
Arboreal Guardian (Elf or Half-Elf) Ghostwalk
Arcane Archer (Elf or Half-Elf) DMG
Arvoreen's Keeper and Arvoreen's Warder (Halfling) Dragon #321
Battlerager (Dwarf) Races of Faerun
Bladesinger (Elf, Half-Elf) Complete Warrior
Blade Brave (Gnome) Races of Stone
Blessed of Gruumsh (Orc, Half-Orc) Dragon #282
Champion of Corellon Larethian (Elf or Half-Elf) Races of the Wild
Dawncaller (Goliath) Races of Stone
