Russ Nicholson's work in the original Fiend Folio is unmatched.

The intricacy of Russ Nicholson's art has such a KVLT feel. He's pretty much the artistic "voice" of the Fiend Folio, and it's metal as hell.

I was going to put this one up to show how I still see halflings, dwarves, and elves.

Though Elmore's BECMI covers get a lot of (much deserved) praise, his interior B&W work is perfect. The way he adds a slightly cartoony look to some of the pieces works wonderfully in a product ostensibly geared to a younger audience.

So much to like about this one, but I think the main thing is it portrays a dragon as being an opportunistic manipulator. A lot of art depicts heroic adventurers fighting dragons, who are certainly capable of holding their own but most dragons would rather avoid fights and this helps show that side of them.

This is probably my favorite piece of work Caldwell has done. Entirely lacking in his usual cheesecake, it evokes such horror. The light illuminating Lorac's withered face, the gems gleaming in the darkness, the way the dragon's tail wraps possessively around the scene. Perfect.

Already on my to-do list this year. Sigh...
