• NOW LIVE! Into the Woods--new character species, eerie monsters, and haunting villains to populate the woodlands of your D&D games.

D&D (2024) I think depending on survey results Aasimar, Genasi, and Changelins could be added to One D&D.

Aasimar seem like the most obvious to add, as they're the counterpart to tieflings. Selfishly I'd love to see genasi there though, as they're my favourite player species.

(though I don't really view planetouched as their own species, more members of other species who have been touched by either planar or elemental magic)

There is a major pattern to the choices of race.

The first kind is classic Tolkien/early D&D inspired, Elf, Human, Dwarf, Gnome, Halfling, and Orc.

The second are hybrid "monster" races, Goliaths (Giants), Dragonborn (Dragons), Tieflings (Fiends), Aasimar (Celestials), Genasi (Elementals), Changelings (depending on version Doppelganger/monsterous or Fey). Now that I think of it, the weird lore shift in MotM from Doppelgangers to Fey could have been to bring it more inline with folklore so they could use it a the Fey hybrid race in a One D&D PHB later. Maybe in One D&D MM Doppelgangers will be fey now too, a change I actually really like.

Changelings are neat but seem like an especially niche option, especially now that nobody needs to pick a species based on ability scores anymore. You could almost reduce them down to a 1st-level feat.

Not really. At-will, very unlimited, Shapeshifting, is a big feature. Letting anyone take a feat and get that would be weird as heck, on top of harder to balance than in a species.

Eh. It's 1/3rd of a 2nd level spell. 1.5 feats seems sufficient.
It is much more than that. Firstly, you can change your size as a changeling. Secondly, it doesn’t require concentration, lasts until you decide otherwise or get ganked, it can’t be dispelled, and can be use infinitely.

The Warlock can take an invocation to gain at-will alter self at 15th level, and that still isn’t the same as what a changeling can do.

The defining trait of a species like the changeling shouldn’t be a feat, anyway. It’s a bad premise.
