So 5e should aspire to...go back to being a previous edition?

I mean, I can totally understand wishing that were the case, if what you really like are the options and complexity of previous editions. But do you think that is what is going to happen?
It is literally an edition trying to capture a balance between 2E and 3E because people were wrong about what would happen with 4E.

That's an interesting (and incorrect) interpretation. No, martial classes should have the same options afforded to them in the same way that spellcasters have had their options from previous editions afforded them. Why should only spellcasters get to keep their options?

Well, if you never try, you gain nothing.

“It’s probably Matt Mercer’s fault.”

I can totally understand voicing wish lists and throwing out trial balloons for discussion. I do that all the time. (Heck, look at my thread on "Less (and different) Spellcasting." It ain't never gonna happen.).

But a lot of the comments veer into some version of "I can't believe how stupid WotC is being for not doing this totally obvious thing that I like." That's just getting really old.

It is a fighter brainstorm thread. You are complaining about the rain.

Do you remember the old flip-book game Ace of Aces? (Oh lord do I wish I still had mine...they're a collectors' item now.). I would love to see a whole line of Ace of Aces books representing different kinds of opponents.
I have a bunch of books called Lost Worlds and a pair for Tie Fighter vs Xwing
EDIT: thinking more about it, I could see a class ability that just generically applied Disadvantage (if you succeed on a roll) to a target, for all their attacks and Str/Dex ability rolls, for one round. Then the player could fluff that as throwing sand in their eyes, or pulling a tapestry onto their head, or reflecting light off their shield, or w/e they wanted.
Reflavoring of the spell silvery barbs can get you very far...

As soon as they tack on, "You may use this ability X times. When you take a long rest you regain all uses." then it's definitely just a re-fluffed spell.
Level up uses exertion points... pretty interesting. I personally like tricks which if an enemy sees the trick it has disadvantage if you try and repeat it, obvious tricks (like a come and get it) can only be used once per set of enemies, period.
