I think if they had just said, 'This is just a revision of 5e' it would have made it all clearer. Using terms like 'next generation' of D&D and 'One D&D' is just confusing things at this point. If it's just revised 5e, then just call it that.
Well, one would think that, but since WotC did in fact call it a revision from the start (in the video announcing the new books) I guess that it wasn't clear enough for some people.

Personally, I think there are a couple issues that led to confusion:
  • People didn't believe WotC (for many reasons).
  • People didn't listen to the actually announcement or descriptions from WotC and just got misinformation from other sources
  • One D&D was a catchy title for a more complex initiative (the rules, D&D beyond, & VTT) that got mislabeled to one part of the triumvirate.

I’m going to go out on a limb here and suggest it was going to be called One D&D…but either the response was poor from customers or they needed to distance themselves from the OGL fiasco in a simple way.
They called the playtest for 5e "D&D Next" and that name was never used for the edition. I see no compelling evidence to suggest that "One D&D" is the same sort of project name.

To the people dreaming that Nentir Vale would be in this new DMG in any form:

I would like to point out that the Nentir Vale/Nerath/PoLand has NEVER been listed among D&D settings in any official WotC survey asking pollsters about their favorite D&D settings, including those leading up to this new revision/edition. If WotC has not pretended like this setting existed before ot acknowledge it in any way, shape, or form, then why would they suddenly pretend like it exists now for this new DMG?

If they're going to be putting in more monsters in the new MM to make it the biggest ever, and they are putting in more high-CR creatures, I could see the gem dragons finally getting equal billing with the chromatics and metallics and graduating into a spot in the MM. I sort of hope so, even if that does mean they get reprinted from Fizbans, since they're always getting short shrift compared to the other two.
Oh gawd please, please, no more dragons. Look, I love dragons. I do. But, there's what, 15 pages of bloody dragons in the 5e MM? And realistically? There isn't a whole lot of difference between each one. Adding 5 more dragon types? No thanks.

Is more effort being put into having functional (and coherent) indexes in the books?

Oh, YES PLEASE!!!

Is that true? I seem to remember it showing up in a survey.* Of course the pantheon from 4e is in the 2014 DMG, so it has been a part of 5e from the beginning.

*Though my google-fu is not the best, i couldn't find any evidence of the Nentir Vale being included in a survey

well, not a good limb to be on, as it is clearly wrong.

WotC called One D&D an initiative right from the start and that they are ‘revising the core rulebooks’ which remain compatible with the released adventures and that they moved past editions and just call the game D&D.

They have been clear on this from the start.

Haha! I watched the video you posted called ONE D&D where they talk about the new version of D&D called ONE D&D with the title and end credit reveal of the new name…ONE D&D…yes so clear they were never going to call it ONE D&D. If anything the limb I went out on just got upgraded.

I’m not fussed really what they call it…just passing a few minutes waiting for a delivery. Have a good day 👍

I can’t remember whether they made it clear when they did the D&D NEXT push or not. End of the day it doesn’t matter and it’s not a hill I want to die on lol…but I do think all the marketing double speak and their barefaced dishonesty and poor conduct recently has me grabbing my pitchfork and heading to the wizard’s castle to have a word.

Have a good day 👍

The inclusion of the Dawn War pantheon in the initial books of 5e was meant for players transitioning their games from 4e to 5e. However, I know (to the best of my recollection) that I have had to type Nentir Vale into “Other” every single time WotC has asked about favorite D&D settings in their surveys. Never once was I given the option to select it from a pre-existing list of their settings.
