D&D 5E Keith Baker Presents Closing Doors On Eberron

Keith Baker has announced that his Eberron-based publishing company will be ending production after 4 years. The company, led by Eberron creator Keith Baker, produced four incredibly popular books on the Dungeon Master's Guild--Exploring Eberron, Chronicles of Eberron, Dread Metrol, and Eberron Confidential. There is one more book planned--Frontiers of Eberron: Quickstone will be released by Visionary Production and Design who will also be continuing publication of the four existing books.

Eberron is an official D&D world, and was introduced to 5E with Eberron: Rising form the Last War in 2019.

We appreciate all the support and enthusiasm that our fans brought these past four years, and it is with a heavy heart that we must inform you that on June 30, 2023 KB Presents will be closing its doors. It has been a joy and honor to bring you our version of Eberron and we are incredibly proud of what we have created.

Ouch. Was there just not enough interest in keep publishing for Eberron?

I expect he was tired of losing such a large cut of the revenue for making content about a world he created.

From what I gathered, it was more he wanted to do other things.

That was the impression last we talked. I got the impression that he wanted to do things that he had complete control over the IP on as well.

As others have said, seems like a combination of both wanting to do other stuff right now, and also the 50% revenue cut DMsGuild takes is tough (and that's the only venue where he can legally publish Eberron content). His books have been great but have high production value and are probably relatively expensive to make; even though they do well on the Guild the profit margin is probably very thin.

I followed the link to the Twitter account for the new company and it was one I was already following somehow. Then I found this tweet:


There was only two people running the Bone, Stone, & Obsidian podcast, so this account at least used to belong to one of the folks that was involved in the books. There's a chance it still is and the door may always be open for Keith to come back.

Pure speculation on my part, and mayhaps a little copium!

Well, if this is how Keith Baker's term with Eberron ends, it's been a hell of a run. And at least he gave us playable 5E Gnolls.

Fully support him moving on if that’s what he wants. But it’s bad news for Eberron. Settings with their creators still actively attached are less susceptible to wrongheaded “reimaginings” and “exciting fresh takes”.
