the real unpopular opinion here is 'why can't they try to find something to interest them that's within the curation rather than needing to be something from outside it?'

I have some thoughts on this, that BG3 has instigated. I may write up more on it later.

But 10× the work to figure out which 5 to learn.

Not as much as you'd think, since many of them will want to understand the rules for a wide range of character types before deciding which type they want to play. And everybody wants to understand the rules for things like falling or operating vehicles, at least in rough (and in the latter case, that's probably all I'm going to bother to learn until I think its going to come up, too). The parts I'm going to learn that they aren't normally come in dribs and drabs.

Back to unpopular opinions:
"The [SUBJECT] should be what the table prefers" is the LEAST helpful or interesting response to a thread that is a question of preference. The poster shouldn't even bother if that is all they have to "add" to the conversation.

When starting a thread, always state specifically which opinions are acceptable so a poster knows not to bother.

If you can't handle an all 3s character, you don't deserve an all 18s character.

You should pick your class first, then roll your stats in order. It's more fun that way.

Tabletop RPGs became more like video games the moment video games started copying elements of tabletop RPGs. Most of them don't have classes because of parallel evolution.
