I heard of a D&D game that started "A purple skinned thing with tentacles on its face and wearing robes backs away into the darkness. You are underground. There are other people around you, some with armor and weapons, looking confused and shaken. You have no idea who they are, or who you are."

What are you talking about? My players would be like, "Oh, good, don't have to waste time on that."

My 5E players would refuse to play without having at least a 20-page backstory that I'd read over completely and integrated into the game world. This is also one huge reason why I stopped running 5E.

I remember the Dresden Files game in which my character's backstory had not only live parents, but my dad was in town, helping my character in his day job. The rest of the group just looked at me like I was mad, and possibly dangerous.
