So when D&D got all skittish about religion in 2e, they renamed several outer planar beings. We know any demons (tanar'ri), devils (baatezu) and daemons (yugoloths) but angels also got renamed to aasimon. Aasimar are derived from that.

It's a very obscure bit of Planescape lore.

That someone wanted another word that began with an A to replace Angel in the Monstrous Compendium.

It's like asking what tanar'ri means. It's a word made whole cloth to say there aren't angels and demons in D&D.

If we start on that road, why stop there? All we need is an Adventurer race, with others under it as just background feats.

But what is an Aasimar?
Human with celestial blood or elf with celestial blood?
Is it the same with both?

Having it as a feat will give separate take on aasimar depending on what 'base' race is.

Same with tiefling, goliath, warforged, shifter, dragonborn, etc....

But if Tief in Tiefling comes from German, maybe Aasimar and Aasimon have origins in real langauges too.

You still labor under the incorrect assumption that these aren't true breeding species (or in the warforged case, aren't created in a literal mass assembly line). Which is reductive nonsense. You might as well make tabaxi half-cats and aarakroca half-birds for all the sense it makes.

You might get some sympathetic support for planetouched races (aasimar, tieflng and genasi) but the rest are true breeding species and not half-breeds.

Well, nothing I could find with a quick Google search at least. Although I'm sure there has to be some interviews that discuss where the 2e names for the planes and denizens come from.
