Well it's confirmed. The half-elf NPC from phandelver has been retconned into a drow.

Seems like hybrid species are being actively retconned out of the adventures and official settings. :(
It's not a retcon. Lost Mines still has a half-elf NPC.

The new book which is a different adventure in a different timeline, per all of WotC's statements about canon, has a drow in the same place.

I mean, it really sounds like what you're describing is a retcon by any normal standard. The timeline thing sounds like absolute smoke-and-mirrors.

The past hasn't change at all.
That adventure is free for everyone to use, and has the exact same species that people falsely claim has been eliminated from the game.

How convenient...
Do you want a world with interconnecting world destroying evils in constant upheaval? Or do you want a world where your character is heroic?

Because the idea that every single adventure must exist in every single world means that your character isn't a hero. There are tens of thousands of people just like them.

I have no problem with PCs not being heroes.
