"You can be anything, but we are mostly going to tell you how whatever you pick is mostly, probably, Good and Heroic."

If anything post Tashas 5e has lost nuance.

It's much more nuanced than 0-4e.

That doesn't mean it can't get better. But if you were to put all official D&D on a spectrum, 5e is the most.
Level Up is better.
And Tasha's doesn't remove nuance. It encourages a wider variety of stories with impacting power (at the species level).

It absolutely is all removing nuance, and older editions did have more.

If you disagree that Wizards direction post Tashas has not been "more heroic, more good, all the time, for everyone" except for the clearly evil and lacking in nuance big bads, then thats fine, we can agree to disagree.

Saying 'everyone can be everything but you are mostly good and seen as good' is not a nuanced take.

I look forward to seeing your Fantasy Heartbreaker where all your issues have been fixed, or failing that, a copy of the sternly worded letter to WotC you're no doubt in the process of drafting explaining all the things they "need" to do to meet your personal standards.

I know you said it in jest, but I'm actually thinking I need to write a Heartbreaker to "fix" 5e. Actually two. One to be super simple -and church friendly - including making race purely cosmetic, and another to go the way I'm seeing the official version plain isn't going (Make all classes start with subclass chosen, place all of the missing archetypes by freely raiding pathfinder, kill battlemaster and give maneuvers to all fighters, balance all classes on a short rest...) and have race be essentially cosmetic, instead moving the features to a new design space.

oh, sure. that's easy.

Orcs aren't all evil. Drow aren't all evil. Goblins aren't all evil. High elves aren't all snooty. Dwarves aren't all scottish drunks. Paladins aren't all lawful good and are powered by the power of their oath rather than a god.
5e allows a much wider variety of stories than the socially backwards versions of the game did.

There is legitimately nothing nuanced or subtle about any of this—it’s blatantly focus tested to appeal to a certain demographic that finds nuance and complexity morally abhorrent lol

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that people thinking making everyone morally bland is “adding nuance”, but I am. I’m reminded that DnD WoTC style isn’t marketed to anyone over the age of 35 hahah
