How many "heroic archetype"s who hold the "fundamental order of the multiverse" in the balance do you have running around your campaign?

I'm guessing there are some people who have "fairly common" 17-20th level NPCs in their world... but I'm guessing it would be a minority and I don't think it's ever been true in a published setting.
Forgotten Realms cough

I do not understand this reference.

But considering Main Character Syndrome is a frequent insult, this is like calling a turkey a turkey. Sure you used the insult as an insult, but what the heck is the turkey supposed to do and why should it feel bad for being what it is?
yeah, i'm confused, too. normally "main character syndrome" refers to when one PC feels like they deserve the spotlight more then the rest of the party. in this context, i...don't get it.

We haven't talked about restricting spellcaster enough?

Make 50 spells DM use only.
Make 125 other spells 4E style rituals with large time and gold costs.
Have another 100 spells eat hit die to cast.

There, done! That should fix it.

Roughly how many 17-20 level does it have? (Serious question). And what is the approximate population of the planet? Or, like, how many per country is that? (Serious question).
Oh jeez, uh, hang on, I know there's a breakdown somewhere in the books. Even if we get past the big names (Manshoon, Szass Tam, Elminster, Larloch, Khelben, The Simbul & the rest of her sisters), I believe Descent into Avernus mentions that there are 3-6 Archmages just hanging out in Candlekeep. There's a lot of Tier 4 NPC's in Dragon Heist.

Back in the Grey Box days, King Azoun of Cormyr was level 20, his court wizard hit level 18 the last time I saw him statted.

More than enough.

The only way we will heal is to stop the cycle of violence here and now. Yes, the wizard players have worked to restrict the fighter time and time again, but ultimately, if we nerf the wizard, the wizards will just nerf us back in the next edition. --and there's not much left to nerf.
