Here's my unpopular opinion: the fiction and mechanics can't be in conflict. Unless someone is using as their standard some prior conception of what the fiction is.
Which is simply another way of saying the fiction has to do what the mechanics tell it to, and that's all it can do. Seems a bit limiting to me, given that - unless they're so broad-stroke as to not really be mechanics at all - mechanics simply can't cover everything the imagination can produce.

One's inability to understand the system/software/etc is NOT a legitimate reason to give it a bad review..
If the system/software/etc. doesn't provide clear enough instructions to allow a halfway-knowledgeable reviewer to understand it then that's more than enough reason to give it the worst review possible; because if the halfway-knowledgeable reviewer can't understand it, how the hell is the average end user supposed to?

Unpopular opinion: there have been developments in RPG design since 1982.

I want REAL fantasy football. With elves, orcs, giants, spellcasters, etc.! Otherwise, it’s false advertising (to me).
(Yoda Mode=true) Bloodbowl... you seek Bloodbowl...
Yep. (I haven’t played it, though- not completely my fault, though.)
It's good. The second 8×11 version is the best rules IMO. Especially with the chearleaders, Judges, and Fatties expansions. Yeah, the MC-1 team is Judges AND Fatties.

Oh, and Fatties and Halflings getting distracted by providing a pie-bar is a great setting rule.
The big dumb jock is not a real thing (outside of extreme outliers). Most high-level athletes are extremely intelligent. Particularly football players who have to both have a strong grasp of extremely technical schemes and the ability to quickly assess and react in real time. The average professional football player is more intelligent than the average software developer (coming from a software developer).
I lived with two college scholarship hockey players and a BBall player... only 2 of the three had any brain cells left... the third was hot summer day, phys ed major...
The BBall player hadn't picked a major yet - freshman. The hockey team were not consistently all that bright. especially the three caught cheating on a weekly opinion piece in reaction to a movie. (not even a majorly academic course: the weekly grade was based upon a post-watching reaction to the movie discussed and shown prior week, and another movie on same theme on own time. They borrowed somoene else's journal from the turn in, hastily copied word for word, and put all 4 in the turn-in box in one group. 3 suspensions; one had been on a scholarship, but not after that. (I was the Technical Assistant for the class... I didn't do grading, I ran the projectors, sound, lights... and occasionally was asked for comment about a particular response when the professor couldn't figure out a word or phrase.) Likewise, a couple hockey players a year later didn't count on 3 graders grading at the same table - we got two identical geography packet answers... to the word... noted because of a particular style of wrong answer - a third also had that wrong answer, but only on that one question; the other two had other wrong answers all matched up...

The big dumb jock does exist as more than a stereotype, and while it's not the majority, there are a few schools and/or teams where it is exemplified strongly.
I should also note: the school in question has no varsity football teams (neither gridiron, soccer, rugby, nor aussie rules), nor baseball. It had and has varsity hockey, volleyball, track and field, swimming, and gymnastics. It has intramural handball and raquetball, as well as hockey, volleyball, swimming...

Hockey was the big money sport, and some of the most clueless about academics were some of the better players... and while technically, there's no official role for a "goon" on a hockey team, at least one of the D's and one of the forwards will be there to hit somebody.
And I had two of them in the same dorm apartment ....

Im not sure I follow how grunge ushered in these trends, but third wave ska should be considered torture by the Geneva Conventions...., or any convention really.
What?! The Mighty Mighty Bosstones were awesome! Their song Cloak and Boots of Elven Kind is a stone cold classic.
