D&D General BG3 Massive Spoiler Thread

OMG I will be on my third attempt to save The Duke from The Iron Throne.

Mizora and her exploding spiders can kiss my butt.
Two potions of speed should allow you to rescue the Duke, Omeluum and all the Gondians. No need to kill all the mooks... just the ones on the escape routes (especially critical for keeping the Gondians alive). Whoever goes after Omeluum gets a shortcut back to the sub.

I was wondering how BG3 players like to compose their party. What I have found works for me is:

1. Front line warrior -- Battlemaster Fighter 12 (Lae'zel) or Berserker Barbarian 5/Thief Rogue 4/Champion Fighter 3 with tavern brawler feat (Karlach).

2. High dexterity archer with sleight of hand skill -- Swords Bard 10/Fighter 2 or Gloomstalker Ranger 5/Rogue 4/Fighter 3 (Astarion).

3. Light Cleric 12 with luminous armor (Shadowheart).

4. Arcane caster -- Wizard 12 (Gale) or Sorcerer 10/Warlock 2 (Wyll).

My normal party is a frontline melee combatant (Barbarian, Fighter, Monk, Paladin), an arcane spellcaster (Sorcerer, Warlock, Wizard), a Cleric, and a ranged striker (Swords Bard, Thief Rogue, Ranger dual wielding handcrossbows with Sharpshooter).

It will be a pretty disappointing experience, in my opinion. Minor Illusion just creates an illusory cat that lures NPCs to a specific area, which is pretty useful if you use it before combat/while stealing, but isn't as versatile as it is in 5e. Disguise Self can be pretty useful for dialogue checks and exploration, but is still pretty limited when compared to 5e. A lot of other notable 5e illusion spells aren't present in the game and the most that were are severely nerfed (Phantasmal Force, Mirror Image, Greater Invisibility).
I tried using seeming to sneak a person past some guards, but they recognized the person regardless and attacked. Worked with invisibility, though.

My main character was a Beastmaster Ranger archer. I briefly tried hand crossbows but was finding that I rarely got the second attack because my bonus action was almost always being consumed by Hunter's Mark (either casting it or switching it to a new target). So I could either (assuming level 5+):
  • do 1d10 main attack damage (crossbow) + 10 Sharpshooter damage + 1d6 damage from Hunter's Mark + weapon rider effect
  • do 1d10 main attack damage (crossbow) + 10 Sharpshooter damage +1d6 damage from Hunter's Mark + weapon rider effect
  • have my animal companion do an additional 1d6 damage to my Hunter's Mark target via Prey's Scent (and an additional 1d6 once the companion gets its second attack)
  • get 1d4 to hit bonus from the Circlet of Hunting (not available until relatively late in Act 2)
or...
  • do 1d6 main attack damage + 10 Sharpshooter damage + weapon rider effect
  • do 1d6 main attack damage + 10 Sharpshooter damage + weapon rider effect
  • use a bonus action to get another 1d6 damage attack + 10 Sharpshooter damage + weapon rider effect

I was playing on Normal so bypassed the multiclassing and respeccing :)

I went with a Wood Elf Beastmaster Ranger archer with a raven companion (eventually took the Beast Tamer Natural Explorer feature so I could dual wield ravens...). So many proficiencies...

Rounded out my troop with the default configurations of Shadowheart (Cleric of Trickery), Wyll (Warlock, the Fiend) and Karlach (Berserker Barbarian... was this her default? Can't remember...).

I don't really care about builds or min/maxing. I just make sure the main roles are there. Had Laezel as Battlemaster Fighter, Karlach as Berserker Barbarian, Shadowdark as Cleric 1/Rogue 11 and myself as Cleric 6/Wizard 6. Combat was generally quite easy from chapter 2 and onwards on Balanced with this setup (sometimes ridiculously so, with significant bosses going down before their turn).
